Tottenham Hotspur Target Cody Gakpo as Forward Solution

Tottenham are moving like a club that smell an opportunity.

More than £230m has already gone into the spine of Ange Postecoglou’s squad this summer – Jan Paul van Hecke at the back, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali through midfield, plus savvy free-agent pick-ups in Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson. Goalkeeper sorted, defence reinforced, midfield refreshed.

Now it’s the turn of the forward line.

Spurs circle as Gakpo comes into focus

On the right, Tottenham have zeroed in on Savinho. The Brazilian has told Manchester City he wants out and has given Spurs the nod. Negotiations between the clubs have been rumbling on for weeks, with a package of around £60m understood to be enough to get that one done.

The original plan was to pair Savinho with Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi, a move that came within 24 hours of an opening bid before the striker’s summer collapsed with a fractured metatarsal. Surgery followed, and with a three-to-four-month lay-off ahead, Kroupi is off the market until at least the winter.

That injury has blown the door wide open for Cody Gakpo.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano recently flagged the Dutchman as a name to monitor, telling Men in Blazers: “Keep an eye on Tottenham Hotspur and Cody Gakpo in the next weeks. They really like the player.” The interest has now moved beyond background admiration.

On Saturday, journalist Paul O’Keefe reported that Spurs have pushed themselves to the front of the queue. Posting on X, he described Gakpo as “a leading contender” as Tottenham look to add firepower.

Versatility that fits Postecoglou’s plan

Gakpo is naturally a left winger, but his time at Liverpool has underlined his ability to step inside and lead the line. That dual threat mirrors exactly what Tottenham were chasing with Kroupi – a wide forward who can morph into a central striker when the system demands it.

For Postecoglou, that kind of flexibility is gold. It offers a different profile to the existing options, and it gives Spurs the chance to reshape their front three without being tied to a traditional No. 9.

The question now is price.

Liverpool set a high bar

Liverpool are not treating this as a bargain-bin sale. According to Anfield Watch, the club have fixed Gakpo’s valuation at around £72m (€85m), using Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona as the benchmark for their stance.

“Anfield Watch understands Liverpool have priced Cody Gakpo at £72m (€85m),” they reported on X, adding that Gordon’s fee formed the base of that figure.

It is a number that would push Tottenham’s summer spend into eye-watering territory, especially if the Savinho deal lands close to the projected £60m. But this is the going rate for a 27-year-old Dutch international who can cover multiple attacking roles and has Premier League experience already banked.

Liverpool’s position is clear. Spurs’ interest is real. The gap between those two points will decide whether Gakpo becomes the headline act in a double-wing revolution in north London, or the one that got away as Tottenham gamble on another target in the final weeks of the window.
