Tottenham Ready to Part Ways with Cristian Romero

Tottenham are preparing to part company with Cristian Romero before the transfer window closes, a ruthless call on one of the pillars of their defence and a clear sign of how dramatically the squad is being reshaped under Roberto De Zerbi.

The Argentine has been a constant presence at the back since arriving in 2021, initially on loan, then as a cornerstone of the project. Now he is being moved on to make way for a new era – and two European giants are already jostling for position.

De Zerbi’s rebuild creates a casualty

Spurs have not tiptoed into this window. They have stormed through it.

A combined outlay of around £237m on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali has sent a message about ambition and direction. Experience has been layered on top, with Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson all arriving on free transfers to stiffen the spine and the dressing room voice.

Two of those six – Van Hecke and Senesi – operate at centre-back. Add them to Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso, and you have a crowded corridor leading to the heart of De Zerbi’s defence. With no European football to stretch the squad across midweeks, something – or someone – had to give.

The decision has fallen on Romero.

“It’s over between Romero and Tottenham”

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has been unequivocal about where this is heading.

“Romero, I stand by my information, it’s over between Romero and Tottenham,” he said on his YouTube channel. “Romero is going to leave Tottenham this summer. He’s leaving, that’s the intention.

“Spurs signed so many centre-backs. They have Micky van de Ven, Van Hecke, Senesi, Kevin Danso, and don’t play European football this season, so they’re ready to let Romero go.”

This is not a gentle phasing out. It is a strategic reset. Tottenham are trimming numbers at the back and cashing in on a player who still carries serious market value, even with question marks over his fitness record.

Inter push, Barcelona wait

Once it became clear Romero would be available, the usual suspects emerged.

“Inter Milan are very keen on the player,” Romano added. “We have to understand if financially they can make it happen, but Inter are on it for Romero.

“Barcelona are interested, but only if they sell a defender this summer. If they let a centre-back leave, in that case there’s a possibility for Romero to join, but only as a domino.”

That is the dynamic in sharp focus. Inter are active, probing the numbers, trying to work out if they can squeeze a deal into their budget. Barcelona, constrained as ever by finances and squad registration rules, are hovering on the edge of the conversation, waiting to see if a departure opens the door.

A separate report from Italy backs up the growing sense of inevitability. Tottenham are not just open to a sale; Romero himself is ready for the next chapter. The defender is said to be happy to close his time in north London and, crucially for Inter, willing to join the Serie A champions rather than holding out for Barcelona.

The price of a reset

Money still matters in all of this. Spurs, according to insider Graeme Bailey, have been aiming for a fee in the region of £50m. That figure reflects Romero’s status, his pedigree as an Argentina international and a defender who, on his day, plays on the front foot with a ferocity few can match.

Reality may bite a little lower.

At 28, with a chequered injury history, Tottenham accept they might have to compromise. A deal closer to £40m is now viewed as a realistic outcome to get the move done and to clear the logjam at centre-back before the window shuts.

For Spurs, it would be a significant sale and a symbolic one: a line drawn under one defensive era, and a bold bet on De Zerbi’s new structure. For Romero, it is the kind of crossroads move that can redefine the final prime years of a career.

Inter or Barcelona. San Siro or Camp Nou. One club pushing now, one waiting for the domino to fall.
