Caution over Maddison and Fernandes

De Zerbi has taken one look at that timeline and decided there will be no shortcuts now. No Maddison in Australia, no gambles on a fragile knee for a pre-season showcase.

Fernandes, the £85m arrival from West Ham, will also sit this one out. He lit up his debut with a stunning strike against MK Dons, a reminder of why Spurs paid so heavily for him, but he is now nursing what De Zerbi has called calf fatigue. The manager has already ruled him out of training until the squad is back in London next week.
