TEAMtalk’s transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported on Friday that Tonali has informed Newcastle he wants the move to north London this summer. The 24-year-old is understood to be ready to accept Tottenham’s proposal, a deal that would more than double his current salary at St James’ Park.

Newcastle, though, are holding firm on price. Their stance remains clear: they want £100m for the Italian.

Spurs, according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, have been preparing a new offer, with Tonali already signalling his willingness to commit to a contract running until 2032. That kind of term underlines how central Tottenham believe he can be to their future.

‘Deal on’: Spurs push as rivals watch

The sense of momentum around this transfer has grown by the day.

Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has repeatedly underlined that Tottenham are the main club in the race. No Manchester City mention. No other European giant lurking in the background. Just Tonali and Tottenham.

“I stand by my news,” Romano said, stressing that Spurs are working on the deal and that, in his words, the “deal [is] on.”

Schira has gone further. After revealing that a new bid would be submitted this week, he is now reporting that Tottenham and Tonali have reached a “total agreement” over personal terms worth £72m in total, with the club increasingly confident they can find common ground with Newcastle.

Two other Premier League sides are described as being “at the window” for the midfielder, monitoring the situation, but Spurs are the ones driving it. They are the club on the front foot, the club Tonali has already given his availability to, the club prepared to build a midfield around him.

A different kind of summer in north London

This is not the typical Tottenham summer of cautious steps and missed opportunities. Four signings already banked, a £52m defender secured, and now a £72m agreement on the table with one of Serie A’s most gifted exports of recent years.

The only question left is whether Newcastle blink on the fee.
