Todd Boehly and Mark Walter in Talks to Sell Chelsea Stakes as Clearlake Capital Seeks Full Control

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly negotiating the sale of their shares in Chelsea to majority stakeholder Clearlake Capital, signaling a potential change in the club's ownership since its post-Roman Abramovich takeover in 2022.

Details of the Proposed Sale

According to the Financial Times, Boehly and Walter might exit the partnership just over four years after the BlueCo consortium's £2.5 billion acquisition of the club. The new deal could value Chelsea at more than £5 billion. Clearlake currently owns 61.5% of the club, while Boehly, Walter, and 90-year-old Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss share the remaining 38.5% equally.

Financial Investment Without Major Silverware

Since May 2022, Chelsea has spent nearly £1.5 billion on transfers, yet this spending spree has not brought a Premier League or Champions League trophy. The period has been marked by erratic performances and numerous managerial changes.

Internal Disputes and Stadium Plans

Despite official denials of discord between Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Boehly, reports indicate ongoing discussions about a buyout for almost two years amid a so-called 'civil war'. A key issue appears to be disagreements over plans for a new stadium. Fans have also criticized the complex ownership structure, expressing concerns about ticket prices and BlueCo's multi-club strategy.

Sporting Direction Under Xabi Alonso

During this uncertain phase, Xabi Alonso has taken charge of the first team. Chelsea invested over £300 million in new players this summer, offset by £143 million in sales. Alonso’s appointment follows Liam Rosenior's brief spell and represents a fresh start. The Spaniard stresses that experience is necessary alongside potential, bringing in seasoned Premier League players like Jordan Henderson (36) and Danny Welbeck (35). This approach marks a departure from previous transfer windows focused heavily on young, unproven talent.

Clearlake to Gain Greater Control

If the sale goes ahead, Clearlake Capital, led by Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, would take near-total control of Chelsea's operations. A governance clause set for next May would see the chairman role pass from Boehly to a Clearlake appointee. Players and staff hope this boardroom clarity will bring stability after a turbulent period.

Upcoming Fixtures and Outlook

Chelsea’s next match is against local rivals Fulham as they look to show if Alonso’s revamped squad can deliver results amid the off-field changes.
