Thomas Tuchel Defends England's Full-Back Selection Amid Injury Concerns
Thomas Tuchel has moved to defend his World Cup selection at full-back after confirming Reece James will miss England’s final Group L match against Panama on Saturday.
The Chelsea right-back did not travel with the squad from their Kansas City base to New Jersey after feeling a hamstring problem in the aftermath of Tuesday’s goalless draw with Ghana. England’s medical staff assessed him following the game, and Tuchel has now ruled him out of the Panama fixture, kicking off at 22:00 BST.
The England manager insists this is a precaution rather than a tournament-ending blow. He maintains James still has a realistic chance of featuring in the last 32 next week, should England seal qualification. Behind the scenes, though, there is real concern. It is understood James is a significant doubt for the start of the knockout phase.
His absence, combined with the calf injury that forced Tino Livramento to fly home from the United States, has thrown a harsh spotlight on Tuchel’s decision to travel with only three recognised full-backs.
Djed Spence, James and Livramento were the only out-and-out full-backs named in the squad. Nico O’Reilly, who filled in at left-back for Manchester City last season, is also in the group but is a midfielder by trade, having come through the academy in the middle of the pitch at the Etihad Stadium. Dan Burn has experience on the left as well, yet is viewed primarily as a centre-back.
On the right, Tuchel is now left with Spence and a set of makeshift options. Central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa are the other candidates to step across if required.
Tuchel, though, refused to show any public doubt.
“Yes, I am [happy with my options at right-back],” he said. “I selected the team, so I'm very happy with everything with the characteristic of the players and strengths that they give us.
“We would love to have every single key player, we would love to have them available, it's not available – we find solutions, it's what we do. It's a tournament, we move on.”
The criticism will linger. James and Livramento both carry long medical files, and taking two injury-prone full-backs to a condensed, high-intensity tournament always looked like a gamble. Now that gamble is being tested.
Tuchel remains bullish about James’ prospects of returning before England’s campaign is over.
“It's a minor hamstring issue, he's not been able to train the last two days,” he confirmed. “He's now on an accelerated rehabilitation program and we take it game by game, but we strongly believe that he will be available [during the tournament].”
While James stays behind to work on his recovery, there was more encouraging news elsewhere in the squad.
Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson have all been cleared to play against Panama. Rice, who had a calf problem, and Anderson, troubled by a glute issue, both sat out training on Thursday but rejoined the group on Friday and are expected to feature.
Saka is ready to start for the first time at this World Cup after being eased in from the bench during England’s opening two matches. The Arsenal forward has been carefully managed because of a long-standing Achilles tendinitis complaint, but Tuchel confirmed he is now fit to lead from the first whistle.
England head into Saturday night with one of their key full-backs sidelined, another already on a plane home, and a selection policy under scrutiny. Tuchel, though, has nailed his colours to the mast. The question now is whether his trimmed full-back department can carry England into the knockout rounds without buckling.
