Teenage Duo Braidan Graham and Ceadach O'Neill Join Northern Ireland Squad

Two teenagers who have yet to win a senior cap, Braidan Graham and Ceadach O'Neill, have been fast‑tracked into Northern Ireland’s squad for June friendlies against Guinea and France, as Michael O’Neill leans into a new cycle with one eye firmly on the future.

Graham, 18, has been prolific for Everton’s Under-21s this season, hitting 12 goals in 18 games and forcing his way into the senior conversation. He made the bench for Everton’s trip to Nottingham Forest in December, but is still waiting for a first-team debut at club level under David Moyes. International football may come first.

O'Neill, also 18, has been a standout performer in Arsenal’s youth ranks. The young midfielder has edged closer to senior involvement at club level, named on the bench for FA Cup ties against Wigan Athletic and Southampton, and now finds himself promoted into the senior international set-up.

Their call-ups arrive at a moment of stability at the top. Michael O’Neill has committed his future to the national team with a new contract running until 2032, a decade-long mandate that gives him the scope to rebuild, refresh and trust emerging talent.

He will have to do so without several established names. Sunderland defender Dan Ballard misses out through injury, a significant absence at the heart of the back line. Paddy McNair is also unavailable after playing his part in Hull City’s promotion to the Premier League, while Portsmouth defender Terry Devlin is sidelined.

The defensive issues do not end there. Eoin Toal remains out after injury ruled him out of Bolton’s League One play-off final victory over Stockport County. In midfield, George Saville and Brad Lyons are both missing, stripping experience from the centre of the pitch.

There is at least one familiar face returning. Swansea City midfielder Ethan Galbraith is included despite not featuring since Northern Ireland’s World Cup play-off defeat by Italy at the end of March. His selection signals O’Neill’s continued faith in his technical quality, even after a spell without minutes.

Liverpool teenager Kieran Morrison, another of the new generation O’Neill has been drip-feeding into the squad, keeps his place and will again have the chance to impress inside a senior camp.

Northern Ireland will meet Guinea in Spain on 4 May, a useful tune-up before the marquee test: a trip to Lille on 8 June to face France in what will be their final outing before the World Cup.

For Graham and Ceadach O’Neill, it is an early shot at the big stage. For Michael O’Neill, locked in until 2032, it looks like the first clear step into the next era.
