Tchouameni's Future: United Faces Madrid's Stubborn Stance

Manchester United have found their man. Real Madrid have made it brutally clear they’re not letting him go.

Aurelien Tchouameni, identified at Old Trafford as the ideal heir to Casemiro, sits right at the centre of a tug-of-war that may never truly start. United have tracked the French midfielder for a long time, viewing him as the anchor around which a new midfield could be built. On paper, the fit is perfect.

On the ground, it’s close to impossible.

Madrid’s stance is unequivocal: Tchouameni is not for sale. Not for negotiation. Not for discussion. The 26-year-old, signed from AS Monaco in 2022 and now a pillar of the Bernabeu midfield, is locked into a contract until 2028 with a €1 billion release clause – a figure that doesn’t invite bids, it repels them.

United’s need is obvious. Casemiro has already left, Manuel Ugarte’s future is uncertain, and the club are scouring the market for a defensive midfielder who can dictate tempo and protect the back line. Tchouameni’s evolution in Spain – from promising arrival to key figure in one of Europe’s most demanding midfields – has pushed him to the top of their list.

Madrid’s response has been just as clear: look elsewhere.

The Spanish giants would only even contemplate a sale if Tchouameni himself pushed to leave, mirroring the scenario that sent Casemiro to Old Trafford in 2022. And even then, the starting price would sit at a minimum of €120 million. That’s the door barely ajar, and only if the player knocks first.

There is another obstacle. His new manager.

Mourinho’s midfield cornerstone

Jose Mourinho has walked back into the Bernabeu with a familiar conviction, and Tchouameni is central to it. The Portuguese coach is understood to see the Frenchman as a non-negotiable part of his plans, the fulcrum around which he wants to organise his midfield.

When Mourinho decides a player is core to his structure, the club usually falls in line. That only hardens Madrid’s position and pushes United even further away from any realistic breakthrough.

The finances don’t help either. Tchouameni is already among Madrid’s highest earners, on around €15.5 million per year including bonuses. Matching that package, then adding the kind of fee Madrid would demand, turns any move into a major, high-risk outlay for United at a time when their squad needs more than one marquee fix.

Instead of plotting an exit, Madrid are moving in the opposite direction.

Locked in, and looking ahead

Initial talks have reportedly begun over a new contract that would keep Tchouameni in white until 2031, with an improved salary to reflect his growing importance. It’s a statement of intent: this is not a player they are preparing to cash in on, but one they want to build around for the next decade.

For now, United can only admire from a distance. The profile is perfect, the timing is not. To prise Tchouameni out of Madrid, they would need the player to force the issue and the Spanish champions to soften a stance that currently looks immovable. Neither seems close.

While United wait, Madrid aim for a galáctico

If one door is slammed shut, another at the Bernabeu might be about to swing wide open – this time at the other end of the pitch.

Real Madrid are reportedly readying one of the most eye-watering moves in transfer history: a package worth up to €220 million to sign Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise. The French international has surged to the top of Madrid’s attacking wishlist, with his recent performances – capped by a standout World Cup – convincing the hierarchy that he is worth a record-breaking gamble.

The proposed deal is staggering. Around €190 million in guaranteed payments, plus a further €30 million in performance-related bonuses, would launch Olise straight into the bracket of the most expensive footballers ever, alongside Neymar’s move from Barcelona to PSG.

Inside the club, the feeling is that Olise fits perfectly with Madrid’s current recruitment strategy: young, already elite, and with the ceiling to dominate the next era at the Bernabeu.

Bayern dig in as Madrid circle

There is, however, a familiar complication: Bayern Munich are in a position of strength and in no rush to sell.

Olise has become one of the standout attacking forces in Europe over the past year, a key figure in Bayern’s forward line and one of their most valuable assets. The German champions are under no financial pressure, fully aware that every goal, every decisive performance only pushes his value higher.

Any negotiation is expected to be long, tense, and unforgiving. Bayern are described as having “little intention” of parting with the Frenchman unless their demands are fully met. In reality, that means only an extraordinary proposal – the sort of offer that reshapes a transfer window – will bring them to the table.

Madrid appear prepared to test that resolve. The club’s decision-makers see Olise as the next marquee signing in a squad already stacked with emerging stars. They know the cost, and they seem ready to pay it.

So while Manchester United stare at a closed door marked “Tchouameni”, Real Madrid are lining up a bid that could redefine the market. The question now is simple: who blinks first – Bayern over Olise, or Madrid over the sheer scale of their own ambition?
