Tchouameni Commits to Real Madrid Amid United Interest

Jose Mourinho has barely had time to settle back into his office at Valdebebas, but he has already shut the door on one of Manchester United’s most ambitious transfer dreams.

Tchouameni chooses Madrid – again

Aurelien Tchouameni has agreed a new long-term contract with Real Madrid, committing his future to the club for another five years despite strong interest from United. At 26, the France international has effectively removed himself from the market just as United were weighing up a major midfield reshuffle.

The timing stings for Old Trafford. News of Tchouameni’s extension broke within hours of United finalising a £50million deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, who is due to undergo his medical today. Santos is one of several midfielders United have tracked this summer – along with Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge – but Tchouameni was the elite option, the kind of signing that changes the profile of a team.

Whether the move for Santos would have ended any realistic pursuit of Tchouameni is unclear. What is clear is that Mourinho has made his stance known: the Frenchman is not leaving.

United’s midfield scramble

United’s need is obvious and urgent. Even before Manuel Ugarte picked up an injury at the World Cup, the club wanted multiple midfield additions. Ugarte’s setback has only sharpened that requirement, with Kobbie Mainoo currently the only fully fit central midfielder at Erik ten Hag’s disposal.

The club have already been forced to walk away from deals for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes after being priced out. That financial reality has pushed them towards younger, developing options like Santos, but the original plan had always involved at least one ready-made, top-tier midfielder.

Tchouameni fit that bill perfectly. Strong, tactically disciplined, and already embedded at the highest level with Madrid and France, he would have walked into United’s midfield and stayed there for years. Instead, he has chosen to double down on his Bernabeu career.

Mourinho shuts the window on United

According to RMC Sport, Tchouameni was determined to remain at Real Madrid, even as offers and enquiries arrived from elsewhere, with United the most serious suitor. Despite speculation that Madrid might be tempted to cash in on the former Monaco man to reshape the squad, tying him down to a new deal quickly became a priority.

Mourinho, back in charge in the Spanish capital, appears to have been fully aligned with that plan. He will keep Tchouameni at the heart of his midfield, alongside a summer intake of four new signings. Only one of those arrivals is a midfielder, and Bernardo Silva – the headline name – is not a direct rival for Tchouameni’s role.

That detail matters. It underlines how central Madrid still see the Frenchman to their structure. For United, it underlines how far away they remain from the level where they can prise a cornerstone player from a club like Real.

Madrid draw the line on Enzo talk

Real Madrid have not just moved to secure what they already have; they have also gone out of their way to quash talk of what they do not want.

The club issued a rare and strongly worded official statement to deny any interest in Enzo Fernandez, distancing themselves from reports linking the Chelsea midfielder with a move to Spain.

“In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid C. F. in the player Enzo Fernández, the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its utmost respect for Enzo Fernández, a great footballer whose career and quality are widely recognised, as well as for Chelsea FC, a club with which it maintains an excellent institutional relationship.

“Precisely out of respect for an institution like Chelsea FC and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always guided Real Madrid's actions, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny these speculations, which are unfounded and do not reflect reality.

“Real Madrid regrets that, despite the clarity of the facts and the absence of any action by the club, information continues to be disseminated that does not correspond to reality and only serves to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved.”

The message is blunt: Madrid are not in the market for Enzo, and they are not putting Tchouameni up for sale either.

United look elsewhere

While Madrid lock down their midfield core, United continue to piece one together. Santos is on his way. Ederson is also scheduled for a medical now that Brazil’s World Cup campaign is over, another important step in a hurried rebuild.

Yet the picture remains incomplete. With Ugarte injured, Mainoo overworked and top targets either too expensive or unavailable, the search for a third midfielder could define United’s summer.

Mourinho’s return to Madrid has already had an impact in Manchester – not with a touchline rant or a Champions League clash, but with a simple decision: Aurelien Tchouameni stays where he is. The question now is whether United can find anyone remotely as influential to anchor their next era.
