Queens Park Rangers have moved decisively in the final stretch before the new season, snapping up right-back Tariq Lamptey on a free transfer after his release from Fiorentina.

It is a signing that carries a hint of risk, but a lot of upside.

At 25, Lamptey should be moving into his peak years. Instead, he arrives in west London with a story already marked by sharp turns: early promise at Chelsea, explosive emergence at Brighton, a move to Serie A that stalled almost as soon as it began, and a serious knee injury that reduced his Italian adventure to just two appearances.

Now, he starts again.

A career that never stood still

Lamptey’s path has rarely followed the easy route. He came through Chelsea’s academy and broke into the first team in one of the most high-pressure fixtures on the calendar – a Premier League debut against Arsenal. That cameo hinted at what he could become: fearless, quick, always looking to drive forward.

He chose to leave that comfort zone early, swapping Chelsea for Brighton in search of regular football. It paid off. More than 120 games for the Seagulls turned him from a promising youngster into a fully fledged top-flight full-back, known for his pace and attacking intent down the right.

That form earned him a move abroad. In September 2025, he joined Fiorentina, a step into Serie A that looked like the next logical chapter for a modern, adventurous defender.

Then the knee went.

The serious injury cut his time in Florence down to almost nothing. Two appearances, a long rehab, and the feeling of a career put on pause.

Resilience and a fresh start

Lamptey insists that pause is now over.

“My recovery (from injury) has gone well and I'm not too far away now. I'm looking forward to joining with the boys,” he told the club website. There was no bravado in his words, just a reminder of the trait that has defined his journey so far: “Throughout my football journey I've always been resilient.”

That resilience has already taken him across borders at international level. Born in England and capped twice for the under-21s, Lamptey chose to represent Ghana and featured at the 2022 World Cup. He has 11 senior caps, experience that should immediately raise the level of QPR’s dressing room.

For a Championship club trying to climb, that blend of top-flight and international pedigree is rare on a free transfer.

QPR’s signal of intent

Inside Loftus Road, this deal is being framed as more than just an opportunistic signing.

“We've had good conversations about what he wants to achieve and how he feels that this is the right environment for him to flourish in,” said chief executive Christian Nourry. The choice of words matters: achieve, flourish, environment. QPR are selling a project, not just a contract.

“His decision to join QPR over a myriad of other EFL Championship clubs and clubs abroad is a further signal of the growing potential of this football club,” Nourry added.

The club have kept the length and structure of Lamptey’s deal under wraps, but the message is clear. They see him as a cornerstone, not a gamble on a short-term fix.

If he returns to anything like his Brighton level, QPR have landed a dynamic, modern full-back who can transform their right side. If the injuries linger, they will at least have rolled the dice on a player whose ceiling is far higher than most in this division.

Portsmouth away, and the first test

The timing is tight. QPR open their Championship campaign away at Portsmouth on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST). Whether Lamptey is ready to start or not, his presence changes the mood around the club.

A squad that finished last season searching for momentum now has a new injection of pace, personality, and top-level experience. A player who has shared a World Cup stage, walked out in the Premier League, and tested himself in Serie A is about to step into the grind of the Championship.

Lamptey has chosen QPR over other options in England and abroad. QPR have chosen a player whose story has never been straightforward.
