Strasbourg Names Hugo Oliveira as Head Coach Following Gary O'Neil's Exit

Strasbourg has appointed Portuguese coach Hugo Oliveira as their new manager after the unexpected departure of Gary O'Neil last month. O'Neil left the Ligue 1 club on June 26 to take charge at Ipswich, having only joined Strasbourg in January.

The club has not disclosed how long Oliveira's contract will last. The 47-year-old arrives from Famalicao, a top-tier Portuguese team, where he held his first head coach role.

"It's an honour to be here in Strasbourg and to join such a great project," Oliveira said in a statement. "I want to bring emotion, create memories and give the best of myself to help the club to develop."

Oliveira spent much of his coaching career specializing as a goalkeeping coach. He worked with the Portugal national team and English clubs Everton and Fulham, collaborating with Marco Silva during his time in England.

In December 2024, he took over at Famalicao and guided them to a fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga last season — their best performance since returning to Portugal's top division six years ago.

Meanwhile, O'Neil led Strasbourg to the Conference League semi-finals and secured eighth place in Ligue 1 before his exit.

Strasbourg will begin their new Ligue 1 season against Marseille during the weekend of August 21-23.
