Spain’s World Cup Celebration Turns to Tragedy in Salamanca

The night Spain reclaimed the world title was supposed to be pure joy. Flags, car horns, songs spilling into the early hours. In Ciudad Rodrigo, a historic town in Salamanca province, the party ended in silence.

A 13-year-old boy died shortly after midnight when part of a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s 1-0 World Cup final win over Argentina. Two other young people were injured, emergency services confirmed, including a child taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

What began as a carefree, impulsive tribute to the new world champions turned fatal in seconds.

Celebration Turns to Chaos

In the main square, the Árbol Gordo fountain became an impromptu stage. Youths climbed into and onto the structure, chanting and cheering after Ferran Torres’s extra-time winner had delivered Spain a second World Cup, their first since 2010.

At around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST), part of the fountain gave way.

Witnesses called emergency services in Castilla y León as the stonework collapsed under the weight of several people who had clambered onto it. The impact left the 13-year-old fatally injured, while others around him scrambled clear or were dragged out amid panic and confusion.

Emergency teams arrived to scenes that stood in stark contrast to the nationwide euphoria playing out on screens and streets across Spain.

A Town in Shock

Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall captured the mood in a stark message on social media: what should have been a night of national pride had become a local nightmare.

“What was supposed to be a celebration for the victory in the Spanish National Football Team's World Cup has turned into a tragedy,” the council wrote, confirming the death and acknowledging the deep shock gripping the community.

The council added that it “hopes for a speedy recovery of the others who have been affected by the incident,” as families, friends and neighbours tried to process how a routine act of celebration had spiralled into loss.

Local media reported that the structure failed after several people climbed onto it, turning a familiar landmark into a deadly hazard under the strain.

A Dark Footnote to a Golden Night

Across Spain, the story of the night was meant to be Ferran Torres, extra time, and a second star on the national team’s shirt. A tight, tense final settled by a single goal against Argentina, echoing the narrow margins of 2010 and restoring Spain to the summit of world football.

In Ciudad Rodrigo, the narrative is different. There, the World Cup win will forever be tied to a collapsed fountain, frantic emergency calls, and a family facing the unthinkable on a night when the rest of the country was celebrating.
