Slavko Vincic, the Slovenian referee who took charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on July 19, has brought the curtain down on his professional career.

The Slovenian Football Federation (NZS) confirmed the decision on Monday, marking the end of a journey that culminated on the biggest stage the sport can offer.

“One week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vincic has officially brought his historic refereeing career at the top of this sport to an end,” the NZS announced on its website.

A simple line, but one that underlines the scale of his exit: he walks away from the game as the man who handled its most watched match.

At 46, Vincic leaves having reached the summit. By being appointed to the World Cup final, the federation of the small Adriatic nation said, he “consolidated his status as one of the best referees in history.” That is not routine praise; that is a federation staking a claim that one of its own stood among the elite.

The recognition has not come only from home.

To cap his farewell season, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named him the best referee of the World Cup, highlighting the “clear and firm disciplinary control that characterizes elite refereeing.” On a tournament stage where every decision is slowed down, replayed and dissected across the globe, maintaining that kind of authority is no small feat.

His performances in the USA also earned him the prestigious “Giulio Campanati” award in Italy, another seal of approval from a country that has long prided itself on its refereeing standards.
