Sam Szmodics Returns to Derby County on Season-Long Loan

Derby County have gone back for a familiar face – and this time, Sam Szmodics is more than a short-term fix.

The forward has rejoined the Rams from Ipswich Town on a season-long loan, but the small print tells the real story: Derby are obliged to buy the Republic of Ireland international at the end of the 2026-27 campaign. The obligation is understood to be triggered by appearances, with the eventual fee expected to land around £2.7m.

It is a move that underlines both faith and ambition. Szmodics, now 30, made only 13 appearances for Derby last season, scoring three times as John Eustace’s side fell four points shy of the Championship play-off places. Yet those months at Pride Park clearly left a mark on both player and club.

“After being here for a couple of months, I knew what the squad and the club were all about – if I had anywhere to come back to, it was always going to be here,” he told the club’s website. His aim is blunt, and it suits Derby’s mood: “Hopefully, we will go one step further than we did last year and get promoted to the Premier League.”

Eustace reunion with a proven scorer

This is not just a sentimental return. Eustace knows exactly what Szmodics can be at his best, because he has already built an attack around him once before.

Under Eustace at Blackburn Rovers in 2023-24, Szmodics tore through the Championship, finishing as the division’s leading scorer with 27 goals. That ruthless season dragged Blackburn clear of trouble and thrust Szmodics into the spotlight. It also persuaded Ipswich to spend £9m to take him to Portman Road in the summer of 2024, as they prepared for their first Premier League campaign in more than 20 years.

The leap to the top flight, though, never quite caught fire. Szmodics scored four Premier League goals as Ipswich went straight back down after a single season. The hangover lingered: just one goal in 18 appearances in the following campaign underlined a stuttering spell, and opened the door to Derby’s initial loan move.

At Pride Park, the fit looked better. The goals did not flow at Blackburn levels, but the chemistry with Eustace resurfaced and the forward’s movement and work-rate knitted neatly into Derby’s attacking patterns. The club have now backed that feeling with a structured, long-term commitment that could become one of the key deals of their promotion push.

Derby’s intent, Ipswich’s reset

For Derby, locking in Szmodics on an appearance-based obligation is a calculated play. It spreads the financial hit, keeps immediate risk under control and, if he stays fit and central to Eustace’s plans, guarantees a proven Championship scorer at what could prove a shrewd price.

For Ipswich, it signals the end of an expensive chapter that never quite matched the script. They paid a Premier League premium and saw only flashes of the Blackburn version of Szmodics. Now they move on, while Derby bet on the idea that the right system and familiar coach can reignite him.

Thompson set for Mansfield move

There is movement in the opposite direction too. While Szmodics settles back into Derby colours, midfielder Liam Thompson is on the verge of leaving the club for Mansfield Town.

Thompson, 24, is a product of Derby’s academy, having spent six years in the youth ranks before making his senior debut in 2021. With a year left on his contract, a fresh start now beckons. For a player who grew through the club’s more turbulent recent years, a switch to Mansfield offers the chance to carve out regular football and a new role away from the shadow of Pride Park.

Derby, meanwhile, reshape again under Eustace. A prolific scorer reunited with the coach who unlocked his best form, a homegrown midfielder heading for a new challenge, and a club that has made its intentions clear: last season’s near miss is not a ceiling, it is a warning shot.
