Salah and Slot: United for Liverpool's Champions League Hopes

Arne Slot has drawn a firm line in the Anfield turf: he and Mohamed Salah want the same thing, and it is not a public row.

On the eve of Liverpool’s final game of the season, the Dutchman moved to cool any sense of a rift after Salah used social media to question the team’s attacking identity in the wake of a damaging 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa.

“Mo and I have the same interests, we want the best for this club, we want it to be as successful as possible,” Slot said on Friday. “We were both part of giving our fans their first title for five years, but we are also aware we haven't brought that same level this season.”

The message was clear: shared frustration, shared responsibility.

Salah’s challenge, Slot’s response

Salah’s post on X landed with force earlier in the week. The Egyptian, third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list, urged the club to rediscover the aggressive, front-foot football that powered their previous glory years under Juergen Klopp. He pointed to an inconsistent campaign and demanded a return to the style that once terrified opponents.

The timing was brutal. Liverpool’s collapse at Villa Park left their Champions League hopes in jeopardy and exposed the fragility of a side still trying to adjust to life under Slot.

Yet inside the camp, Slot insisted, the criticism has not derailed preparations.

The forward’s words, he suggested, have not seeped into the training ground in a way that disrupts the work. The focus, he stressed, remains on the only thing that matters this weekend: qualification.

“I don't think it is important what I feel, what is important is we qualify for the Champions League on Sunday,” Slot said. “So I prepare Mo and the whole of the team in the best possible way, that is what matters.”

Will Salah play?

If there is tension, Slot is not feeding it with team-sheet drama. Asked directly whether Salah – who is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season – would feature in Sunday’s finale against Brentford at Anfield, he refused to bite.

“I never say anything about team selection, so it would be a surprise to you if I did that right now,” he replied.

So the question lingers. Will Salah’s final act in a Liverpool shirt come on the pitch, in front of the Kop, with a Champions League place on the line? Or will his last contribution be a pointed message online about what the club should be?

Slot kept that mystery intact, but he did not hide the stakes.

Liverpool sit fifth on 59 points, three clear of Bournemouth in sixth, with a six-goal cushion on goal difference. One Champions League spot remains. One game to secure it.

“I was very disappointed after our loss against Villa, as a win would've given us Champions League qualification, and now there is one game to go and it is vital for us as a club,” he said.

Sunday is not just a farewell. It is a test of nerve.

A base for what comes next

Slot framed the Brentford match as more than a finish line. For him, it is a launchpad.

“What we and I want is for the club to be as successful as last season,” he said. “And that is where my main focus is on now because the game on Sunday could give us a really good base for next season.”

A Champions League place changes everything: recruitment, confidence, the mood around a manager still embedding his ideas. Drop out, and the narrative around this first year hardens.

At least one piece of good news arrived at Kirkby. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker, out since mid-March with a hamstring injury, returned to training on Friday and is expected to be fit for the final game. A world-class goalkeeper back on the team sheet, just when the margin for error shrinks to nothing.

So Liverpool walk into Sunday with their season balanced on a single afternoon: Salah’s future already decided, Slot’s project still taking shape, and a Champions League spot there to be claimed or squandered.

Anfield has seen enough defining days to recognise another when it comes.
