Ruggeri Joins Aston Villa: A New Chapter in His Career
Ruggeri arrives at Aston Villa with pride, pedigree and a point to prove. The Italian left-back has completed his move from Atletico Madrid to the Premier League and spoke with clear excitement about the scale of the step he has just taken.
The 24-year-old only joined Atletico last season on a five-year deal, but wasted no time making his mark in Spain. He clocked up 47 appearances in all competitions and supplied seven assists before Villa’s project and the pull of English football turned his head.
“I am very happy to be here,” Ruggeri told Villa’s official channels. “It’s very exciting for me to be part of this club; I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and start this adventure. I was really enchanted by the project of the team, I know it’s a huge league with big expectations, and looking at recent results, I had no doubts about saying yes and being part of this club.”
From Atalanta to Aston Villa, his climb has been steep. Ruggeri rose quickly through the ranks in Bergamo, earning a reputation as a modern full-back comfortable on the biggest stages. That reputation is backed up by his European record: across spells with Atalanta and Atletico, he has already played 23 times in the Champions League, chipping in with three assists.
Unai Emery now inherits a defender who can do more than just patrol the touchline. Ruggeri can slot in as a traditional left-back or push higher as a wing-back in a five-man midfield, a versatility that fits neatly with Emery’s tactical demands and the constant tweaks that come with juggling domestic and European campaigns.
“I’ve definitely watched lots of Aston Villa games,” Ruggeri said. “I was really impressed by the intensity that the coach wants, the quality of the football he demands, and this is why I had no doubts about coming here to begin defending these club colours. Last season was important for me, and I hope to do just as well with Aston Villa, and then win a trophy with this club.”
That ambition is not idle talk. Ruggeri already knows what it feels like to chase silverware. He lifted the 2023-24 Europa League with Atalanta and reached the Copa del Rey final with Atletico Madrid last season, achievements that sit alongside multiple call-ups to the Italy squad. Yet one thing is missing: a first senior cap for the Azzurri.
The move to England is calculated. A strong season in the Premier League, under a coach with Emery’s profile and in a team pushing deep into Europe, could be the final nudge he needs to convince Italy’s staff he is ready for the international stage.
His inspirations underline the standards he sets for himself. “As a child I really liked Paolo Maldini as a left-back, but over the years I didn’t have a specific player to model myself on. He was the one I looked up to when I was a kid,” he admitted. You do not casually name-check one of the greatest defenders in history; you do it because you understand the level you are chasing.
There may be little time to settle. Villa face Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend, with Arsenal looming immediately after in a heavyweight early-season clash. A swift debut is firmly on the table.
Ruggeri has already started to immerse himself in his new home, studying Villa Park from afar before he feels the noise in person. “I saw many videos and photos of the stadium, and I can’t wait to play there, because I saw the fans are incredible. I can’t wait to get to know the atmosphere,” he said.
Villa, riding a wave of confidence after their recent European success and domestic progress, now add a hungry, Champions League-tested defender to a squad that expects to compete on every front. The stage is set; it is up to Ruggeri to turn that excitement into a permanent place in Emery’s plans – and, perhaps, a long-awaited debut in Italy’s famous blue.
