Arsenal Targets Man Utd Academy Duo in Youth Rivalry

Arsenal have launched a bold raid on Manchester United’s academy, pushing to sign young duo Sam Murray-Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye in what looks like the latest flashpoint in a growing youth‑level rivalry between the two clubs.

The Telegraph reports that the Premier League champions are attempting to prise both players away from Old Trafford this summer as part of an aggressive overhaul of their youth recruitment. Arsenal have tracked the pair closely and believe they can convince them to swap Manchester for north London.

This is not a random swoop. It’s payback.

United have already dipped into Arsenal’s youth set-up in recent seasons, landing Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven. Those moves clearly stung. Now Arsenal are hitting back, targeting two of United’s own prospects and turning the academy landscape between the clubs into a genuine battleground.

Player Backgrounds

Scanlon, 19, and Ogunneye, 20, both spent last season out on loan chasing senior minutes. Scanlon featured six times for Swindon Town in League Two, scoring once, while Ogunneye played 21 matches for Newport County before returning to United in January. Those spells underlined a simple truth for both players: they need a clear first-team pathway, and they may not see it at Old Trafford.

That is where Arsenal have stepped in.

The London club have moved quickly, with Scanlon understood to have already agreed a two-year contract that includes an option for a further 12 months. It’s a relatively modest deal on paper, but it underlines how determined Arsenal are to stockpile the best emerging talent and give themselves multiple shots at producing future first-teamers.

Recruitment Strategy

This surge in youth recruitment is no coincidence. It follows the appointment of Pascal De Maesschalck as Arsenal’s new academy head, replacing Per Mertesacker. With De Maesschalck in place, the club have pivoted sharply towards a more aggressive domestic talent grab, determined to build a deeper, more competitive pipeline beneath Mikel Arteta’s senior squad.

Sporting director Andrea Berta set out the new tone, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Pascal to Arsenal. He brings extensive experience from some of Europe's leading football clubs and has an outstanding track record in youth development. We are excited to have him with us as we continue to build for the future, developing young players and identifying the best emerging talent to join Arsenal on a journey towards professional football."

The message is clear: Arsenal do not just want to keep pace with their rivals at academy level; they want to set the standard.

Future Prospects

For now, the focus is on the details. Arsenal still need to finalise paperwork and agree compensation with Manchester United to complete the deals for Scanlon and Ogunneye. Those negotiations will decide how sharply this particular blow lands at Old Trafford.

And the push will not stop there. Arsenal are also expected to wrap up moves for other teenage prospects, including Vincent Joseph and Axel Donczew, in the coming weeks as the recruitment drive gathers momentum.

The real test, of course, comes later. Can this new wave of signings break through and convince Arteta they belong in a title-chasing first-team squad? Or will this arms race between academies simply reset and start again with the next batch of restless teenagers?
