Rotherham Signs Defender Sonny Aljofree from Manchester United

Rotherham United have dipped into Manchester United’s academy pool, handing a two-year deal to defender Sonny Aljofree after his release from Old Trafford this summer.

The 22-year-old, comfortable both at centre-back and right-back, joins the Millers with the club also holding an option to extend his stay by a further year. It is a calculated move: low risk, potentially high reward, and very much in keeping with a squad rebuild that needs energy as much as experience.

Aljofree arrives with a pedigree that does not quite show up in senior appearances. He never broke into United’s first team, but he did lift the FA Youth Cup in the 2021-22 season, part of a group widely regarded inside the club as one of the more promising crops of recent years.

The pathway in Manchester, though, is brutally narrow. So he went looking for minutes. Spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County hardened him in the realities of senior football: smaller crowds, heavier pitches, and forwards who care little for academy reputations.

That grounding has fed into a determined pre-season with Rotherham. Aljofree has been on trial with the Millers over the summer, training and playing his way into a contract rather than walking in on name alone. The staff have seen him up close, watched him defend his box, step out with the ball, and cope with the physical demands they will ask of him across a long campaign.

There is also a family thread to his story. He is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, a player who carved out a solid career in the lower leagues. The surname is familiar in English football’s less glamorous corners; now the younger Aljofree has the chance to write his own chapter.

For Rotherham, the signing adds versatility and youth to a back line that will be tested relentlessly. For Aljofree, it is something simpler: a clear route, regular football, and the opportunity to prove that a Manchester United education can still pay off far from the Premier League spotlight.
