Roma Evaluate Summerville Wage Demands as Godts Emerges as Alternative

Roma’s summer plan for a marquee winger has hit its first real snag, and a new name is moving quickly into focus.

Crysencio Summerville remains the headline target. The Giallorossi have put together a package worth €40 million, bonuses included, to convince West Ham. On the fee, there is no hesitation. Roma are ready.

The problem sits on the other side of the table.

Summerville’s camp is pushing for a salary between €6 million and €7 million per season. Those numbers slice right into Roma’s internal wage structure and have cooled what, earlier in the week, looked like a deal edging towards agreement on personal terms. What had seemed close now feels distant.

So the search has widened.

Tony D’Amico, tasked with delivering Gian Piero Gasperini the wide forward he wants for a Champions League campaign, has turned his attention to Mika Godts. The Ajax winger is no longer just a name on a long list; he is fast becoming the main alternative if the Summerville talks stall for good.

On the surface, the two operations look similar. Ajax’s asking price for Godts is expected to land in the same bracket as the €40 million Roma are prepared to put down for Summerville. The difference lies in what comes after the transfer is done.

Godts’s wages would sit neatly inside Roma’s current pay hierarchy. No shock to the dressing room. No need to rip up the salary scale. At 21, the Belgian is also four years younger than Summerville, a profile the club can project forward, not just plug in for the present.

His output last season gives that idea real substance. Across 44 appearances for Ajax, Godts delivered 17 goals and 15 assists, a breakout year that pushed his name across the desks of Europe’s biggest clubs. Bayern Munich and Chelsea have already been linked with him, a sign that Roma are not the only ones who see a player on the rise.

So the choice in Trigoria is as old as the transfer market itself: pay top wages now for a more finished product, or commit similar overall resources to a player whose ceiling might end up even higher.

Time, though, is not a luxury.

Gasperini is waiting for his main wide man as he sketches out a Champions League side, and every day without that piece complicates pre-season plans. D’Amico can study the numbers and profiles, but the clock is ticking on a decision that will shape Roma’s attack for years, not just for August.
