Roma Pursue Greenwood as Marseille Faces Sale Pressure

Roma have moved to the front of the queue for Greenwood, striking an agreement on personal terms with the Marseille forward and putting real weight behind their interest in the 24-year-old.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Greenwood has given the green light to a switch to the Stadio Olimpico. The proposed deal is built on a progressive salary structure, starting at a net €4 million per season plus performance-related bonuses – the kind of contract that signals long-term faith rather than a short-term gamble.

Roma’s ownership has made no secret of its desire to upgrade the attack, and Greenwood has emerged as a central target in that plan. For now, though, the move sits in the familiar limbo between player agreement and club agreement.

Marseille are said to want around €55 million. Roma’s opening offer is closer to €40m. That gap is not small, and the two clubs are still locked in talks as they search for a number that works for both sides.

The French club’s position is complicated by the backdrop. Marseille need to raise funds amid financial concerns and reports of a possible threat to their participation in next season’s Europa League. That pressure nudges the situation towards a sale, even after Greenwood’s productive spell in Ligue 1.

Signs around the player point in the same direction. Reports in France suggest Greenwood has already handed back the keys to his house in Aix, a quiet but telling indication that he is preparing for life away from Marseille and, potentially, away from France altogether.

For much of the summer, that life looked set to be in Istanbul. Fenerbahce had pushed hard, their interest surging when presidential candidate Hakan Safi publicly tied part of his campaign to landing Greenwood and claimed to have an agreement in place running until 2030.

Then the politics shifted. Safi lost the election to Aziz Yildirim, and with his defeat, the proposal built around his candidacy effectively vanished. The Istanbul route closed almost overnight, and the momentum swung firmly towards Rome.

Roma now stand as the leading contenders for Greenwood’s signature, with the club intent on giving their forward line a different edge before the new season. The player’s reported preference is clear; he wants the move. The challenge lies in the numbers.

The next phase is all about negotiation between Roma and Marseille. Roma are expected to keep pressing to drag Marseille’s valuation down in the weeks leading up to pre-season, testing how far financial pressure in France can bend the fee.

One other club will be watching every development from a distance. Manchester United are reportedly set to benefit from a sell-on clause inserted into Greenwood’s previous transfer. Any agreement between Roma and Marseille will not only reshape one attack in Serie A and one in Ligue 1 – it could ripple back to Old Trafford as well.
