Rodri Shares Details of Private Call with Jose Mourinho After Choosing Barcelona Over Real Madrid
Rodri, Barcelona's headline signing this summer, has opened up about the intense pursuit from Real Madrid before finalizing his move to Catalonia. The Spanish midfielder revealed that Jose Mourinho personally called him to persuade him to join the Santiago Bernabeu instead of Camp Nou.
A Tough Decision Between Two Giants
Rodrigo’s arrival at Barcelona is one of the standout transfers in recent La Liga seasons. After a successful run under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, the 30-year-old was caught in a fierce battle between Spain’s two biggest clubs.
The midfielder disclosed that Mourinho reached out directly to share his vision for Rodri’s role in Madrid’s squad. He expressed surprise that their private conversation became public but showed respect for Mourinho’s approach.
Respectful Decline
While appreciating Madrid’s interest, Rodri’s heart was set on Barcelona’s sporting project. Yet, he maintained professional courtesy due to Mourinho’s stature in football. When asked about the specifics, he remained discreet but acknowledged Mourinho’s efforts.
"I don't think it's right for him to reveal a private conversation, but obviously he expressed his desire for me to join and what I could bring to the team," Rodri told Mundo Deportivo. "The treatment was very good. When I made my decision, I also called him to thank him for the interest and the way I was treated. I think he's a fantastic coach; wherever he has gone, he has proven himself during successful spells, and Real Madrid will be tough rivals in this league."
Ignoring Outside Influences
During the transfer window, rumors suggested that links between Rodri and presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme might have cooled Madrid's interest. However, the midfielder said he stayed fully focused on his national team duties at the time.
"Honestly, I stayed out of all that because it happened during the World Cup, and I was focused with my national team on achieving what remains the most important milestone I've reached," Rodri explained.
High-Stakes Duel Ahead
Ultimately, the pull of Camp Nou outweighed Mourinho’s personal appeal and any external political links. Rodri’s arrival marks a significant moment for Barcelona, as they aim to regain supremacy in Spain and Europe. His game management and defensive awareness were key factors for the club's future plans.
With Real Madrid poised to challenge them strongly, the midfielder will face the man he declined in upcoming battles.
