Rodri Shares Joy After Barcelona Debut in 2-0 Win Over Athletic Club
Rodri expressed his excitement after finally stepping onto the field for Barcelona in their commanding 2-0 La Liga win against Athletic Club at Camp Nou. The midfielder, who moved from Manchester City during a high-profile summer transfer, made his debut as Hansi Flick's team kept their perfect record intact this season.
Raphinha and Fermin Seal Victory
The match saw Barcelona maintain an unbeaten run with a solid 2-0 victory. Despite starting with four teenagers in the lineup, it was the experienced Raphinha who opened the scoring. In the 37th minute, he controlled a precise through ball from Pedri, outmaneuvered goalkeeper Unai Simon, and scored.
Barcelona dominated the game’s pace, forcing Simon into making eight vital saves to keep Athletic Club competitive. The win was confirmed eight minutes before full time when Fermin Lopez capitalized on a sloppy clearance by Aymeric Laporte, tapping in from close range after Karim Adeyemi's dangerous low cross.
Rodri's Warm Welcome at Camp Nou
Rodri earned a loud cheer when he entered the game in the 63rd minute, replacing Raphinha. This was his first match since joining from Manchester City, after missing the season opener due to minor back surgery. The 30-year-old Spaniard shared his thoughts post-match.
"Very happy to make my debut. Happy with the win. Two for two," Rodri told DAZN. "It’s important to get into a rhythm and adapt to this great team. First few minutes and good feeling."
"It’s been a long summer, longer than usual. I need to get back into the swing of things quickly. This is where I wanted to be, and I’m happy with how things have turned out. Now it’s time to get to work."
He also praised young teammate Lamine Yamal for his attacking contribution.
"Lamine was coming off a rough patch, but today he bounced back and showed his best form. We need that from him, that work ethic and consistency, because the talent is there and the goals will come."
Flick Applauds New Signing
Rodri’s arrival has clearly boosted morale in Catalonia. After the game, Hansi Flick spoke highly of the midfielder’s immediate impact.
"Everyone is happy he’s playing for us, playing for Barca. He’s the perfect player for us, the perfect player for our philosophy, the style we want to play football," Flick said.
Looking Ahead
With six points from two games, Barcelona now focus on their upcoming Monday night fixture against Rayo Vallecano. Flick will welcome the option of starting Rodri if needed, adding strength to a disciplined squad.
