Referee Suffers Concussion in Pre-Season Friendly Incident

A pre-season friendly in eastern France lurched into disturbing territory on Saturday when referee Mathilde Demoncay suffered a concussion after being knocked to the ground while trying to break up a mass confrontation between players.

The 26-year-old official was in charge of a warm-up match between French side Metz and Dutch club Fortuna Sittard at Schlossberg Stadium in Forbach when tempers boiled over late in the first half.

What began as routine pre-season sparring suddenly turned ugly.

Melee erupts in front of “Respect the referee” sign

Around the 40th minute, tension snapped. Two opposing players clashed after a shirt-tugging incident, squaring up chest to chest. Teammates sprinted in, the confrontation swelling rapidly from argument to melee.

Demoncay moved decisively towards the flashpoint, stepping between bodies as players jostled and pushed. In the chaos, she was knocked off balance and crashed heavily to the turf, video on social media showed.

The scene carried a brutal irony. The scuffle unfolded directly in front of a large pitchside banner bearing a simple message: “Respect the referee.”

For several minutes, Demoncay lay on the ground, clutching her arm as assistant referees, stewards and medical staff rushed onto the pitch. The match stopped. The crowd watched in uneasy silence while order was slowly restored.

Concussed referee tries to continue

Despite the heavy fall, Demoncay initially attempted to carry on. After treatment, she resumed the game, shifting from the center to work as an assistant referee once play restarted.

Metz led 3-1 against Fortuna Sittard in what should have been a straightforward tune-up for the new season. Instead, the main talking point had nothing to do with tactics, fitness or form.

By half-time, it was clear Demoncay could not continue. She left the field at the interval, and another assistant took over her duties. Local media later reported she had suffered a concussion.

Clubs stay largely silent

Fortuna Sittard acknowledged the incident in their match report, describing it as a “remarkable moment” during the 3-1 defeat, but offered no further detail or comment on the confrontation that triggered it.

Metz made no reference to the episode in their own reporting of the friendly.

A game designed to prepare two clubs for the season ahead instead delivered a stark reminder of the risks match officials face, even in fixtures that are supposed to be low-key. On a summer afternoon in Forbach, a sign demanded respect for the referee. The pictures from the pitch told a very different story.
