Real Madrid Open to Tchouameni Sale as Manchester United Shows Interest

Manchester United’s long, stumbling search for a true holding midfielder has swung back towards a familiar address: the Bernabeu. This time, the name on the folder is Aurelien Tchouameni – and, crucially, Real Madrid are ready to listen.

United have made a firm enquiry for the France international as they look for a specialist No 6 to anchor their rebuilt midfield. Club sources in Madrid describe United’s interest as “strong” now that Tchouameni’s World Cup campaign with France is over and the market begins to move in earnest.

On paper, he should be untouchable. Tchouameni is under contract until 2028, cost Madrid an initial €80m – a fee that could climb to €100m – when he arrived from Monaco four years ago, and has already started a World Cup final and lifted the Champions League in white. At 26, he sits squarely in United’s preferred 22-26 age bracket for core signings and brings the kind of pedigree Old Trafford has tried, and often failed, to buy in recent years.

Yet Madrid’s stance has shifted. New coach Jose Mourinho had planned to keep Tchouameni at the heart of his midfield, but the 15-time European champions are prepared to cash in if a suitably heavy offer lands on the table. The European champions rarely fall in love with any one midfielder for too long, and the market around them is moving.

Madrid’s midfield puzzle

The Spanish giants have already reshaped the centre of the pitch. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City, having spent last season operating in a deeper role under Pep Guardiola. Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde remain central to Madrid’s plans, with contracts that run a year beyond Tchouameni’s current deal.

There is another strand. Madrid have been linked with Spain star Rodri, voted the best player at the World Cup and out of contract at City next year. A move this summer has been floated, and if Madrid sense a path to the 30-year-old, someone has to make way. Tchouameni is suddenly no longer untouchable; he is an asset with a market.

Reports in Spain suggested the Frenchman had already agreed a contract extension, but no announcement has followed. The silence has not gone unnoticed in Manchester.

United’s midfield reset

At Old Trafford, the need is clear. United have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to thicken the midfield options, but neither is a pure defensive midfielder in the mould the club has lacked since Casemiro’s powers faded. They can pass, they can carry, they can support. What United still crave is someone to sit, screen and dictate.

Tchouameni ticks those boxes. Age, availability, big-game experience and the ability to operate as an outright No 6 make him an obvious fit for a club trying to lower the average age of its core while raising the technical ceiling.

He is also the one that got away. United were offered the chance to sign Tchouameni from Monaco in 2021, when he was still a rising talent rather than a Champions League winner. The club had not budgeted for a midfield arrival that summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted a midfielder – Declan Rice sat high on his wishlist – but the numbers never aligned. Madrid stepped in a year later, signing Tchouameni to replace Casemiro after United prised the Brazilian away in a £70m deal.

That deal, too, came in crisis. United had just been humiliated 4-0 at Brentford, the midfield looked broken, and Casemiro, at 30, was the emergency fix. He impressed in his first and last seasons, but his time at Old Trafford also coincided with two of the worst United sides in 34 and 51 years. The club released him last month, drawing a line under another short, expensive chapter.

Lessons from Madrid

United’s record when shopping in Madrid’s squad is mixed at best. Casemiro delivered moments of authority and leadership but could not drag a flawed team into contention. Raphael Varane, signed at 28 in 2021, arrived with four Champions League titles but never escaped the injury cycle; he still started in League Cup and FA Cup final wins before his own release.

Go back further and the warning signs flash brighter. Angel Di Maria became a British record signing at £59.7m in 2014, dazzled briefly, then faded just as quickly. He was gone inside a year and greeted by loud boos when he returned to Old Trafford with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019.

United now stand at another crossroads with another Madrid name. This time, the profile is different: younger, closer to his peak, already accustomed to operating as the deepest midfielder for club and country. The fee will be heavy, the competition real, the expectations ruthless.

Madrid, for once, are not slamming the door. United have asked the question. The answer, and the price, will reveal just how serious both clubs are about reshaping the heart of their teams.
