Real Madrid have spent the early weeks of this window insisting they would only move for the right player. Now they have put a name to that stance: Rodri.

The other eye is on the heart of midfield. Bruno Guimarães remains the headline target. The Newcastle and Brazil midfielder, 28, has been on Mikel Arteta’s list for months and nothing has changed there. Newcastle are braced to knock back an opening £70m offer, yet the player is understood to be keen on the move to north London.

Arteta, according to reports in Spain, is prepared to push towards the £90m mark to get his man. That is the level it may take to make Newcastle even listen. The stakes are clear: Guimarães would arrive as a centrepiece, not a complement.

Arsenal are not limiting themselves to one name. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, 22, an England international, is also in the frame as a midfield option. Less expensive, less established, but technically gifted and homegrown. If Guimarães proves unreachable, Scott offers a different route to refresh the engine room.

There is also business to resolve on the fringes. Talks are ongoing with Hamburg over Fabio Vieira. The 26-year-old Portugal midfielder wants to return to the Bundesliga club after a loan spell last season, and discussions are advancing over a permanent move. It would be a clean break for a signing that never quite found rhythm in the Premier League.
