Real Madrid's Pursuit of Bastoni as Mourinho's Rebuild Accelerates

The clock is ticking at Valdebebas. With only a week to go before preseason begins, Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho are still staring at an unfinished squad list and a transfer puzzle that needs solving fast.

Key farewells have already gone through. Dani Ceballos, Dani Carvajal and David Alaba have all said their goodbyes, stripping away experience and depth from a dressing room that has seen plenty of battles. Those exits have created room, but not yet the balance Mourinho wants.

Four signings are already in the bag, yet the Portuguese coach is not close to satisfied. He wants a centre-back. He wants a midfielder. And he wants them now.

Bastoni at the top of the list

In defence, the target is clear: Alessandro Bastoni.

SPORT, citing Italian journalist Fabio Gatto, reports that Real Madrid plan to approach Inter Milan this week to sound out the Serie A champions over their left-footed defender. The idea is straightforward: ask Inter what they intend to do with Bastoni and what their starting price is, then move quickly.

Madrid do not want this to drag. They want to know the terms, weigh them, and, if the numbers make sense, close the deal as soon as possible.

Inter are expected to value Bastoni at around €65 million. That is the going rate for a 25-year-old, title-winning, left-footed centre-back in today’s market, and Madrid know it.

Crucially, the player is ready to move. Bastoni has rejected a renewal proposal from Inter that included a pay rise, a clear signal that he is looking for a change of scenery and has set his sights on the Bernabéu. When a player of his profile turns down improved terms from the champions of Italy, it tends to mean only one thing: his mind is already elsewhere.

A left-footed piece for Mourinho’s puzzle

From a sporting perspective, Bastoni fits a very specific need.

Real Madrid’s current stable of centre-backs is heavily tilted to the right. Mourinho wants a natural left-footer to balance the back line, someone comfortable stepping out, opening the pitch, and complementing the existing options rather than duplicating them.

Bastoni offers exactly that profile. A left-footed defender who can anchor the line or slide across, he would give Mourinho the structural symmetry he is looking for without sacrificing aggression or height at the back.

But there is a catch. Numbers.

Overcrowded back line, exits required

Madrid already have 11 defenders on their books. Before Bastoni can even think about pulling on the white shirt, space has to be created.

The club is working on at least one centre-back departure and one left-back exit. Fran Garcia and Raul Asencio are currently the leading candidates to move on this summer, a necessary sacrifice if Bastoni is to arrive and the wage bill is to stay under control.

Those decisions will not be easy. They rarely are when the squad is this full and the season is about to start. But the hierarchy knows that keeping an overloaded back line while trying to integrate a major signing is a recipe for unrest and stalled careers.

Midfield question still open

While the Bastoni operation gathers pace, the midfield plan remains blurred.

Two doors have already slammed shut. Moves for Matues Fernandes and Enzo Fernandez are off the table, leaving Madrid to reassess their options in the centre of the pitch. Mourinho still wants another body there, someone who can handle the physical and tactical demands of his game model, but the preferred target is not yet clear.

That uncertainty adds another layer of urgency to a crucial week. Preseason is when Mourinho lays down his rules, his structure, his hierarchy. He will want as many of his key pieces in place as possible when the players report back.

One thing is certain: if Real Madrid manage to free up space and push through a deal for Alessandro Bastoni, they will not just be adding another defender. They will be handing Mourinho the left-footed cornerstone he has been asking for at the heart of his new project.
