Real Madrid have made their choice. No more midfielders. No late-market twist. After failing to prise Rodri away, the European champions have closed the book on strengthening the centre of the pitch in this window, unless something seismic happens with their own stars.

The club’s leadership is convinced these two technically gifted playmakers can control the rhythm of matches and keep the ball moving into dangerous areas. If the plan clicks, Madrid will not just cope without a new holding midfielder; they will dominate games on their own terms.
