Real Madrid's 2026-27 Season Preview: Mourinho's Vision for Arda Güler
Real Madrid step into the new 2026-27 season on Saturday against Espanyol with Jose Mourinho already putting his stamp on the squad – and on its future shape.
His first pre-season back at the Bernabeu has been busy, occasionally bumpy, but largely effective. The club have plugged several obvious gaps: Denzel Dumfries to reinforce the right flank, Marc Cucurella to add bite and energy on the left, Yan Diomande to deepen the options in the middle. The squad looks fuller. It does not yet look complete.
One hole still glares back at them: a true midfield controller. Real Madrid chased that profile hard. Enzo Fernandez slipped away. Rodri, long admired, remains out of reach. With the window failing to deliver the metronome he wants, Mourinho is already turning his gaze inward.
The name he keeps coming back to is Arda Güler.
The Portuguese coach, speaking to El Chiringuito (via Diario AS), outlined a long-term vision for the Türkiye international that goes well beyond his current role as a silky playmaker between the lines.
"I love Güler. I think something similar is going to happen to Modric or Bernardo Silva. You start in one position and end up in another, you start as a 10 and you will finish as an 8 or 6. I think Arda will go in that direction with his evolution and knowledge of the game."
It is a revealing comparison. Luka Modric and Bernardo Silva both arrived at the elite level as advanced creators, then slid backwards into deeper roles where their vision and rhythm shaped entire matches. Mourinho clearly believes Güler can follow the same path, growing from a No.10 into the man who stitches everything together from midfield.
That shift will not happen overnight. For now, Güler’s repositioning is more a roadmap than an immediate tactical switch, especially with another Portuguese star earmarked for that area of the pitch.
Bernardo Silva is being lined up to operate in that deeper role this season, offering control, work rate and imagination from midfield. Mourinho has spoken in glowing terms about his compatriot, stressing that Silva arrives as a key footballing piece, not as a political signing or a mere statement aimed at Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.
For Real Madrid, the short term belongs to Bernardo. The long game, though, might just be Arda Güler learning how to run a midfield of his own.
