Xabi Alonso Insists Enzo Fernandez Is Not for Sale
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has drawn a firm line under the noise around Enzo Fernandez, insisting the midfielder is going nowhere this summer.
Fernandez has sat at the heart of one of the window’s more persistent sagas, with Manchester City monitoring the 25-year-old Argentina international as they search for midfield reinforcements. The European champions were linked with a move before a 14 August deadline for a formal bid, but that date came and went without an offer.
Inside Stamford Bridge, the message has been clear. Chelsea have told Fernandez’s camp that he is not for sale in this window, and Alonso backed that stance on the eve of the club’s Premier League opener against Fulham.
“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday,” Alonso said, underlining both the club’s position and the player’s immediate focus.
The Spaniard has been encouraged by what he has seen since Fernandez returned to the squad after the World Cup, highlighting his professionalism on the training pitch and his reintegration into the group.
“He has integrated really well since rejoining the group after the World Cup and is training really well. I see him with a really good attitude and that’s what we want,” Alonso added.
City’s interest has not gone away. They continue to track Fernandez as part of their search to deepen their midfield options, but Chelsea’s stance remains unchanged: they expect him to stay in west London.
Pre-season underlined the tension around his name. Fernandez received a mixed reception from sections of the Chelsea support, yet the club handed him the captain’s armband in the friendly win over Real Sociedad, a clear show of faith in his leadership and status.
The transfer window closes on 1 September, so the speculation will run a little longer. For now, though, Alonso is planning for a season with Enzo Fernandez at the centre of his Chelsea midfield, not at the heart of someone else’s.
