Manchester United Pursues Alejandro Balde Amidst Transfer Interest
Manchester United have picked up the phone. On the other end: Jorge Mendes, the super-agent with a direct line into some of European football’s biggest dressing rooms – and into FC Barcelona.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United have contacted Mendes to ask about the situation of Alejandro Balde, the highly rated Barça left-back and La Masia product. With the club hunting urgently for a new option on the left side of defence, Balde’s name has moved onto their agenda.
United forced to pivot after Hall setback
United’s recruitment team had already drawn up a list of potential left-backs, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall among the preferred options. That route has effectively been blocked, though, with Newcastle making it clear they are not willing to part with the Englishman.
So United have turned to alternatives. Balde is one of them – and not just any name. At 22, already a full international and a starter at one of Europe’s giants, he fits the profile of a long-term solution.
That is why Mendes received the call: United wanted clarity on Balde’s situation and the conditions that might be required to prise him away from Barcelona.
Mendes in Barcelona, talks on multiple fronts
The timing is no coincidence. Mendes is in Barcelona today for a series of meetings, one of which concerns the future of Marc Casado, who is expected to leave the Spotify Camp Nou.
With United’s enquiry now on the table, the expectation is that Balde’s name will also feature when Mendes sits down with club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco. The Premier League side have made their interest known; the agent is in the right city, at the right moment, to test the waters.
The question is simple: is there any room, any crack at all, for a deal?
Balde’s stance: Barcelona or nothing
For now, the answer from the player’s side is blunt. Romano reports that Balde has no intention of leaving Barcelona this summer.
He is settled at his boyhood club, committed to fighting for his place even as competition intensifies. With João Cancelo now signed permanently by the La Liga champions, the battle for the left-back slot will be fierce. Balde is not backing away from it.
At this stage, the 22-year-old is not entertaining a move. The only scenario in which he would reconsider, according to the report, is if Barcelona themselves tell him he is no longer wanted. Until then, his focus remains locked on the Camp Nou and on consolidating his status in the starting XI.
The clock, though, is ticking. Less than two weeks remain before the transfer window closes, and United’s need at left-back is real. The situation is live, even if the player’s position is clear.
From back trouble to starting role
Balde’s summer has not been smooth. A back problem disrupted the early part of his pre-season and kept him out of action when others were building rhythm and fitness.
Once recovered, he began to claw back minutes. He started in the friendly against FC Basel and then again in the Joan Gamper Trophy clash with Al-Ahly last night, a sign that the coaching staff see him as ready to step back into the competitive frame.
His contract with Barcelona runs until 2028, a powerful piece of leverage for the Catalan club as Europe circles their brightest young talents. And despite Cancelo’s arrival, Balde is expected to start against Elche this weekend, with the Portuguese full-back only just joining up with the squad.
United have made their move. Barcelona hold the contract. Balde, for now, holds his ground.
