Newcastle United Pursues Wilfried Singo for €40 Million Bid
Newcastle United’s summer rebuild has largely been about tomorrow. Young legs, long contracts, a squad reshaped with the future in mind. But with the transfer window ticking towards its Sept. 1 deadline, the club’s next move could be a very expensive decision for right now.
After securing full-back Amar Dedic to reinforce the right side of Matthias Jaissle’s defense, Newcastle are still hunting for at least one more defender. Center backs remain the priority, and the club’s name keeps circling the same pool of targets. On Tuesday, though, a new – and costly – option burst into view.
Newcastle move for Wilfried Singo
Turkish outlet Fanatik reported that Newcastle have lodged a €40 million (£34.5 million) bid with Galatasaray for Ivory Coast international Wilfried Singo.
“Newcastle United, a Premier League team, has officially entered the race for the 25-year-old versatile player,” Fanatik stated. “According to Sabah newspaper, the English club allegedly approached Galatasaray with a record-breaking transfer fee offer of 40 million euros.”
Singo only arrived at Galatasaray from Monaco last summer for around €30 million (£25.9 million). One season on, Newcastle’s reported offer already hands the Turkish champions a sizeable profit on their investment. A quick flip, and a healthy one.
Galatasaray are not biting yet.
According to the same report, the Istanbul club are holding out for closer to €60 million (£51.3 million). With Singo under contract until 2030, they believe time and leverage are on their side, and they are in no rush to cash in.
A long-standing target, a fresh dilemma
Newcastle’s admiration for Singo is not a sudden impulse. The defender was linked with the Magpies more than a year ago, back when he was still at Monaco and valued at around €25 million. His current valuation sits slightly lower, at €23 million, but the numbers being discussed now are far higher.
What makes him attractive is obvious. Singo can play as a central defender and at right back, giving Jaissle tactical flexibility as he tries to refresh an aging back line. With Dedic already in the door and existing options in both roles, though, Singo would likely arrive as high-end cover across two positions rather than as an undisputed starter.
That is where the debate starts to bite. Is €40 million a smart outlay for a versatile defender who might initially rotate rather than dominate? Or does his profile, age, and contract length justify stretching the budget, especially if Galatasaray refuse to move from their €60 million stance?
Newcastle have drawn their line at €40 million, at least for now. Galatasaray have drawn theirs much higher. Somewhere between those two figures lies the answer to how bold this new-era Newcastle really want to be in reshaping their defense.
