Rayan Ait-Nouri Aims for More Than Just Defense at City

Rayan Ait-Nouri is not content with simply patrolling the flank. Under Enzo Maresca, he wants numbers next to his name.

Fresh from scoring his first goal for City in the win over a K-League XI, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender laid out his intent in clear terms on the club’s official channels. The strike meant more than a pre-season notch; it felt like a glimpse of what he believes he can become.

“I would like to,” he said when asked if he wants to score regularly. “It was my first goal for City, and it's a part of the game I really enjoy. I have always tried to play in an attacking way, but I don't score all the time.

“It's a real sensation for me, and I want to learn every day, work more and more to add as much to my game as I can.”

Those words fit neatly with Maresca’s blueprint. The Italian pushed the 25-year-old into a more advanced role in the latest outing, positioning him behind striker Divin Mubama and alongside Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo. Instead of hugging the touchline, Ait-Nouri stepped into pockets of space, linking play and driving at defenders.

The reward arrived with that first City goal and, just as importantly, with Maresca’s first win in charge. A pre-season victory over a K-League XI will not define a campaign, but it does offer a sliver of rhythm and belief for a squad adapting to new demands and a new structure.

Now comes a far sterner examination.

City close their tour with a high-profile friendly against Atletico Madrid on Sunday, the kind of test that exposes flaws and sharpens edges in equal measure. For Ait-Nouri, it is another chance to prove he can be more than a full-back nudging forward from deep.

“It will be a different game than the last two games,” he said. “We really enjoy playing this kind of game against one of the better teams in Europe; it will help us really prepare for next season.

“We know about Atletico's level, and it will be good to play them before we face Arsenal next week.”

Atletico, then Arsenal. A new manager, a new role, and a defender intent on rewriting his own job description. If this is the starting point, the question now is how far Ait-Nouri can push his attacking ceiling once the real games begin.
