Rangers Target Josh Windass Again as Wrexham Holds Firm

Rangers are back for Josh Windass. Again.

According to talkSPORT, the Ibrox club have formalised their interest in the Wrexham forward ahead of the summer window, marking a third attempt to bring him back to Glasgow. They know exactly what they’re chasing: a player who wore the shirt 73 times between 2016 and 2018 and has since grown into a ruthless finisher.

This time, the pursuit has a familiar face driving it. New Rangers manager Danny Rohl is pushing hard for a reunion, having overseen Windass at Sheffield Wednesday, where the attacker flourished with 50 goals under his watch. Rohl wants to rip up and rebuild an attack that misfired badly in a season that ended with a sobering third-place finish behind Celtic and Hearts.

He sees Windass as central to that reset.

Wrexham’s prize asset, though, is in no rush to leave. Fresh from being named the club’s Player of the Season, Windass has nailed his colours firmly to the Racecourse Ground mast. Speaking to talkSPORT earlier this month, he underlined his commitment: “Yeah, I signed a three-year deal in the summer. I feel like I had a really good year this year, and yeah, hopefully next year we can go one better.”

Those aren’t the words of a man agitating for a move.

Wrexham’s stance backs that up. The Welsh club already turned away Rangers once this year, rejecting a formal approach in January, and their resolve has only hardened after a historic campaign from their No. 10. Windass delivered five assists and a club-record 16 Championship goals in 41 league appearances, the kind of output that turns a key player into a cornerstone.

Crucially, he is locked in until 2028. That long contract hands Wrexham enormous leverage at the negotiating table. They do not have to sell, and certainly not on the cheap. Transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has reported that, despite Rangers’ clear intent, formal club-to-club talks have yet to begin. For now, it is positioning, posturing and planning.

At Ibrox, the planning is extensive. After finishing behind both Celtic and Hearts, Rangers are preparing a sweeping overhaul of their forward line. The chase for Windass is just one part of a broader offensive rebuild. In parallel, the club are in advanced negotiations for Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, a move that underlines Rohl’s determination to add proven goals rather than projects.

The message is blunt: the current attacking options are not enough.

Across the border, Wrexham’s ownership group will not be bullied by a bigger badge. Backed by Hollywood money and momentum, they are assembling a squad they believe can turn a near-miss into a Championship play-off push next season. Letting their standout forward leave for anything below full market value would cut against everything they have built.

So the stage is set. Rangers, armed with a manager who trusts Windass and a burning need to close the gap in Scotland. Wrexham, armed with a long contract, a record-breaking season and owners with ambition to match their profile.

Something will have to give. The question is whether it will be Rangers’ persistence or Wrexham’s resistance.
