Rafael Leao has nudged the door to Old Trafford a little wider – and he’s done it with his own words.

The AC Milan forward, long admired across Europe for his explosive running and highlight‑reel moments, has openly name‑checked Manchester United as one of the Premier League clubs he follows most closely. For a player whose camp is already pushing for a move, that matters.

“I like Manchester United, especially for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is my idol. But Arsenal is also a team I follow on TV,” Leao said in a recent interview, via Alfredo Pedullà. A simple answer. A very clear signal.

From €100m poster boy to €50m opportunity

Since arriving from Lille in August 2019, Leao has grown into one of Serie A’s marquee attractions. Eighty goals and 65 assists in 291 games for Milan tell only part of the story; the rest is in the way he plays – the long strides, the sudden gear changes, the feeling that something might snap in the defence every time he isolates a full-back.

The acclaim has followed. British GQ branded him a “global superstar”. Max Allegri and CBS Sports have both described him as “world-class”. At his peak, Milan put a price tag of more than €100m (£87m) on his head and didn’t blink.

The landscape has shifted.

Leao is coming off a disappointing campaign by his own standards and has so far refused to sign a new contract. Milan, reading the room and the balance sheet, are now prepared to cash in for around €50m (£43.5m). A player once ring‑fenced as untouchable has become a live opportunity.

United, Arsenal… and an unexpected rival

On May 1, intermediaries offered Leao’s services to Manchester United, with his representatives actively working to engineer a move. The Premier League is his stated dream. The Cristiano Ronaldo connection only sharpens the appeal of Old Trafford.

Arsenal sit in the frame too. Leao’s mention of the Gunners was no accident: a title-chasing project, Champions League football, a coach in Mikel Arteta who has shown he can elevate attacking talent. If the final decision rested purely with the player, United and Arsenal look like the two English destinations that genuinely excite him.

The reality is colder. His future will be dictated by who actually comes to the table with a concrete bid that satisfies Milan.

For now, one club has stepped closer than the rest.

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reported on May 23 that Manchester United and Fenerbahce are currently showing the strongest interest. On paper, that sounds like a two-horse race. In practice, the tracks are not the same.

Fenerbahce are a giant in Turkey, with a fierce fanbase and regular European nights. But the Turkish Super Lig cannot match the global reach, commercial pull or competitive depth of the Premier League. If those are the options in front of him, the path Leao is likely to choose is obvious.

A move to United would allow him to follow, quite literally, in Ronaldo’s footsteps and finally test himself in the league he has grown up watching.

INEOS, swap ideas and a reshaped United attack

United’s interest in Serie A talent is not limited to Leao. The club are closing in on Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with a £38m deal understood to be close. Once that business is wrapped up, Leao is viewed as the next major target from Italy.

Behind the scenes, INEOS are exploring different ways to structure a deal. On April 30, they were tipped to offer Milan up to three players in part-exchange to drive the fee down even further. The message is clear: they see Leao as a potential cornerstone of a rebuilt frontline and are willing to be creative to get him.

He is not the only name on the left-wing shortlist. United are also tracking Morgan Rogers, Yan Diomande and Iliman Ndiaye as they search for fresh competition and variety on that flank. Those profiles point to a broader strategy: younger, more dynamic, more direct.

All of it intersects with the club’s stance on Marcus Rashford. United’s “position” on his return, and the fresh “complications” around a permanent move to Barcelona, will shape just how aggressively they push for a marquee left-sided signing. If Rashford stays and rediscover his best form, the need is different. If he goes, the vacancy becomes glaring.

A superstar at a crossroads

For Milan, this is a pivotal summer. Lose Leao and they lose not just goals and assists, but a symbol of their resurgence. Cash in at €50m and they bank a sizeable fee for a player who may not renew. Hold out and they risk watching his value slide.

For Leao, it is a career‑defining decision. Stay in Italy and remain the face of Milan, or jump into the unforgiving, intoxicating glare of the Premier League. Follow Ronaldo’s trail at Old Trafford, or wait to see if Arsenal or another heavyweight makes a late move. Paris Saint‑Germain and Bayern Munich have both been offered his name, but for now those giants are locked on other targets.
