Manchester United have confirmed the 21-year-old has joined Middlesbrough in a permanent deal worth up to £14million, a fee that smashes the second tier’s previous records for a keeper. Leicester City’s move for Mads Hermansen and Southampton’s signing of Daniel Peretz, both just over £6m, are left well behind.

United, though, have not cut the cord completely. The deal is laced with protection: a buy-back clause, matching rights and a 35 per cent sell-on clause. If Vitek explodes at the Riverside and moves on again, Old Trafford will feel the benefit in more ways than one.

This is a transfer driven by a player who refused to stand still. From the start of the summer, Vitek made it plain he would not accept another year as a back-up. Senne Lammens has nailed down the No.1 shirt and Karl Dalow arrived to be the deputy; Vitek saw the writing on the wall and decided it would not be his name on the bench.

He said as much after United’s opening pre-season game against Wrexham, pausing for reporters and laying out his stance in a few blunt lines: he felt ready, he wanted to go somewhere to be a No.1, and he was waiting to see what would happen. Now he has his answer.

For Middlesbrough, who pushed hard for promotion last season, this is a statement. You do not spend a record Championship fee on a goalkeeper to ease him in gently. You do it because you believe he can anchor a promotion charge, handle the traffic of a 46-game slog and still look imposing in April when legs and minds are heavy.

Vitek’s journey to this point has been relentless. United picked him up from Sigma Olomouc in 2020 and quickly realised they had something serious on their hands. He started every game of the club’s triumphant 2021/22 FA Youth Cup campaign, a run that hardened him in front of big crowds before he moved up to the Under-21s.

From there, it was all about real football. Accrington Stanley first, on a six‑month loan in January 2024, then a season-long spell with Blau-Weiß Linz in Austria for 2024/25, another step away from the comfort of Carrington. He then earned crucial Championship minutes at Bristol City, the kind of experience that tends to sharpen a goalkeeper’s decision-making or expose him. In Vitek’s case, it attracted suitors.

Now comes the real test. At 6ft 6in, he has the frame to dominate the box and the pedigree of a United education behind him. Middlesbrough have paid the premium to bet on his ceiling. United have structured the deal to make sure they are close by if he reaches it.

The next time he walks out at Old Trafford, it might be through the away tunnel. Or, one day, through the home one again at a very different stage of his career.
