Pochettino Calls for Spurs to Be Declared 2016-17 Champions

Mauricio Pochettino, former manager of Tottenham Hotspur, has stated that his old club deserves the 2016-17 Premier League title after Chelsea admitted to multiple financial rule violations. The Argentine believes that simply fining Chelsea is not enough and that the trophy should be given to Spurs.

The 2016-17 Season Revisited

The Football Association recently fined Chelsea £10 million and issued a suspended transfer ban following their admission of 74 breaches of financial regulations during Roman Abramovich’s ownership. These violations, occurring between 2011 and 2018, involved undisclosed payments to unregistered agents linked to significant transfers.

Chelsea’s current owners self-reported these issues after taking over in 2022. Key players involved in those transfers included Eden Hazard, David Luiz, and Nemanja Matic, all important figures when Chelsea won the league under Antonio Conte in 2016-17.

That season, Tottenham finished seven points behind Chelsea in second place. Spurs led the league in attack, defense, and suffered the fewest losses but ended up without the title. Pochettino now argues that this record needs changing.

Pochettino: “We Deserve to Be Champions”

Pochettino insists Tottenham were denied the title due to unfair circumstances. He said a financial penalty alone doesn’t address the problem of breaking rules on such a scale.

“We should have been awarded it. If that was true, and that happened, for sure we deserve to be champions for that year. Because we were the second best.”

The coach pointed out that Chelsea admitted wrongdoing yet faced no sporting consequences. “They were punished, they admitted (it), so that’s it? The title should go to the team that was second. We didn’t compete with the same rules,” he explained.

Pochettino suggested that equal financial conditions could have changed Spurs’ fortunes. “Maybe with the same rules, we could have signed players who would make the team better or score more goals. It’s not me complaining. It’s the truth.”

Addressing Chelsea Fans and Sporting Integrity

Despite coaching Chelsea in the 2023-24 season, Pochettino did not hesitate to criticize his former club.

“Chelsea fans will be upset with me because I’m saying this. But if we were at Tottenham and broke the rules, I would admit it and say, ‘We don’t deserve the title because we broke the rules.’”

He emphasized the need for uniform standards across clubs: “It’s impossible if only some clubs play with offside and another plays with no offside, or one with VAR and another without. For everyone, it needs to be the same rules.”

While acknowledging Antonio Conte’s coaching success, Pochettino stressed that rule-breaking demands consequences.

“I don’t say they did not play well. Conte was great. But if you broke the rules, then ciao. You need to give it to another team.”

Pochettino warned that leniency encourages future rule-breaking, citing his own Spurs exit in 2019 as evidence of competing against clubs operating differently.

“What is being promoted and incentivized is to break the rules. If you don’t punish properly, I lost my job because we didn’t win the title. We fought against clubs who worked in a completely different way. I think we deserve more.”

Will English Football Take Retroactive Action?

Historically, English football authorities avoid stripping major titles for financial misconduct, favoring points deductions instead. With increased focus on financial fair play, cases like Chelsea’s continue to spark debate about fairness and enforcement.

Retroactive punishment against Chelsea seems unlikely, leaving the 2016-17 records unchanged for now. Still, Pochettino’s remarks fuel ongoing discussions about how the Premier League manages its wealthiest clubs and upholds sporting integrity.
