Philadelphia Union Sell Olwethu Makhanya to Rangers

Philadelphia Union have sold one of their most promising defenders, agreeing a transfer that underlines both their scouting eye and the scale of their current reset.

Olwethu Makhanya, the 22-year-old center back who has grown from U22 Initiative signing to World Cup defender, is heading to Scottish Premiership giants Rangers FC in a deal reportedly worth up to $4.5 million.

For a player who arrived from Stellenbosch FC in July 2023 as a long-term project, it is a rapid rise. For the Union, it is a significant payday at a complicated moment.

From U22 gamble to World Cup stage

Makhanya came into MLS as a bet on potential. Philadelphia used the U22 Initiative to bring him in from the South African Premiership, banking on his athleticism and reading of the game.

He delivered.

Across all competitions, Makhanya made 53 appearances and even chipped in with three goals, but his real value lay in the stability he brought to the backline. He was part of the group that powered the Union to the 2025 Supporters’ Shield, a season that reinforced the club’s reputation as one of the sharpest operators in the league.

That form carried him onto the biggest stage. This summer, he represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a marker of just how far he had come in three years.

Inside the club, there is no doubt about the arc of his development.

“We greatly appreciate Olwethu’s contributions in his three years with the Union,” said sporting director Jon Scheer. “He has grown tremendously since joining the club and proved himself to be impactful on our backline. We believe this is a great opportunity for Olwethu as he continues to develop, and we wish him all the best in this next chapter.”

A big move, at a difficult time

The timing is striking.

Philadelphia sit 14th in the Eastern Conference with 13 points at the halfway point of the season, a position that jars with their recent status as perennial contenders. They have already turned to interim coach Ryan Richter to steady the ship. Now they must do it without one of their starting-caliber central defenders.

Rangers, on the other hand, are getting a player entering his prime, tested in MLS and on the international stage, and with resale value built into the profile. For a club accustomed to chasing titles and European football, Makhanya fits the mold: young, hungry, and already hardened by high-pressure games.

For the Union, the deal is classic MLS business logic. Develop, showcase, sell. Yet the sporting challenge is obvious. They lose a key defensive piece just as they are trying to claw their way back into the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs picture.
