Phil Bardsley Warns Manchester United on Left-Back and Midfielder Needs

Phil Bardsley has warned Manchester United they are gambling with their season if they go into the campaign without a new left-back and a specialist defensive midfielder – and he believes Lewis Hall is the answer to at least one of those problems.

The former United full-back, never shy of a firm opinion, is blunt about Luke Shaw’s situation. Shaw has looked sharp in pre-season, but Bardsley cannot ignore the history.

“There’s still time in the transfer window but they need at least one more midfielder, someone who is more defensively-minded, and another left-back,” he said. “Luke Shaw has looked sharp in pre-season but with his injury record you always worry. I don’t think you can always rely on him for a full season, especially when United are back in the Champions League, because of the amount of games they’ll have to play.”

United’s return to Europe’s elite brings a heavier schedule and far less margin for risk. For Bardsley, that makes a reliable, modern left-back non-negotiable – and he has one name at the top of his list.

“Lewis Hall from Newcastle United would be the perfect fit,” he insisted. “It’s just a question of getting him out of Newcastle United this summer when they’ve already sold so many players and lost Eddie Howe. He’s a Premier League proven player though and a great age. I think the way he plays suits Manchester United to a tee.”

Hall’s profile is obvious: young, already tested in the Premier League, technically secure, and comfortable in advanced areas. In Bardsley’s eyes, that blend makes him far more than a depth option. It makes him a solution.

When the conversation turns to alternatives, the former defender draws a clear line between Hall and Myles Lewis-Skelly, another highly rated talent on the market. The choice, for him, is straightforward.

“I prefer Lewis Hall to Myles Lewis-Skelly when you look at what Manchester United need this summer,” Bardsley said. “Hall is better suited to playing left-back. I think if you look at Lewis-Skelly, he’s a much better player when you play him in midfield, and I don’t think United need another young player going into the middle of the park. They need a proven defensive midfielder who’s got that experience to come in and own that position.”

Lewis-Skelly’s pedigree is not in doubt. He already has a Premier League title and a Champions League final start on his CV, rare achievements for a player of his age. Bardsley recognises that, but still draws a hard conclusion.

“Listen, he’s a quality player. There’s no doubt about it. He won the Premier League last season and started in a Champions League final in midfield. But for me, if I had to pick between the two of them, it’s Lewis Hall every day of the week and twice on Sunday.”

The problem for United is that admiration does not equal availability. Newcastle United have recently made it clear they do not intend to sell their left-back this summer, even after significant departures and the exit of Eddie Howe. Arsenal, for their part, are also understood to be unwilling to part with one of their most prized prospects in Lewis-Skelly.

So United sit in familiar territory: clear needs, clear targets, and complicated negotiations. If Hall and Lewis-Skelly remain off limits, the recruitment team will have to look elsewhere, with Fulham’s Antonee Robinson already linked with a move to Old Trafford.

The message from Bardsley, though, cuts through the noise. With the Champions League back on the agenda and a gruelling season ahead, United cannot afford to get this window wrong – especially on the left side of their defence.
