Pep Guardiola Rejects Italy's Coaching Offer

Pep Guardiola has rejected the chance to become Italy’s next head coach, turning down a sweeping proposal to rebuild an entire footballing nation.

According to Sky in Italy, Guardiola informed the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on Thursday night that he would not be taking the job, citing personal reasons that stretch beyond football. The decision ends an ambitious courtship that ran over three days and was built around a vision far bigger than simply coaching the senior side.

Italy’s grand pitch – and Guardiola’s refusal

The FIGC, still reeling from a historic collapse on the international stage, had gone all-in. Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo led the talks, meeting Guardiola in Barcelona and outlining what they called an ‘Azzurro project’ – a blueprint to rebuild Italian football from the ground up.

This was not just about replacing Gennaro Gattuso. It was about reimagining the entire system.

Italy have failed to qualify for an expanded World Cup this summer, the latest blow in a staggering decline. Since winning Euro 2021 under Roberto Mancini, they have missed the last three major tournaments. That failure triggered a huge shake-up inside the FIGC, with Maldini and Leonardo brought in to find a new leader and a new direction.

Guardiola was their dream candidate. The federation were ready to stretch their budget to unprecedented levels to get him. He would not just coach the senior team; he would sit at the heart of a long-term plan touching every national side, a central figure tasked with laying “solid foundations” for the future.

The Catalan listened carefully. Then he said no.

A free agent, but not yet free for football

For the first time in a decade, Guardiola is out of work. His 10-year spell at Manchester City ended with 20 trophies and a win ratio of 70.8 per cent, a period of dominance that reshaped English football and the Champions League landscape.

But this next chapter was never going to start immediately.

A year before leaving the Etihad, he had already set the tone in an interview with Sky Sports. When the City era ended, he said, he would step away.

“No plans for [coaching] for a while. Otherwise I would be here. I need to step back. I will not [coach] for a while,” he told reporters in his final Manchester City press conference.

He spoke openly about energy, or rather the lack of it for another daily club battle.

“I feel I will not have the energy every day, with expectations to fight for the title. I know myself, I have that energy, but I feel like I will not have it [in the future].”

Later, in an exclusive with Sky Sports, he went deeper into the personal reasons now understood to have driven his rejection of Italy.

“There are things that I have not done that I want to do. I still have my father alive. I want to spend more time with him. My kids... And a lot of things as a human being I can do. I'm fortunate I can decide, that's why I took this decision.”

The FIGC’s offer, however grand, crashed into that reality.

England, the one that almost was

This is not the first time a major federation thought it had Guardiola lined up.

Back in 2024, it was widely reported that he had reached a verbal agreement with the FA to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager. The move would have sent shockwaves through international football. Instead, he changed his mind and stayed in Manchester.

England turned to Thomas Tuchel, who went on to guide them to their best World Cup finish on foreign soil. Tuchel’s contract now runs until the end of Euro 2028, and he has publicly committed to seeing out the deal.

So England moved on. Italy hoped to be the nation that caught Guardiola at the right moment. They have discovered, like the FA before them, that timing with him is everything.

The lure of the national game

Guardiola has never hidden his curiosity about international management. The key, in his own words, is that it must be a different type of challenge.

In 2024, speaking with chef Dani Garcia, he made his stance on another club job crystal clear.

“What I'm not going to do is leave Manchester City and go to another country to do the same thing as I am now.

“I wouldn't have the energy to do so. I'm still here doing what I am today. But the thought of starting somewhere else, with all the process of the training and so on... no, no, no! Maybe a national team, but that's different.”

That line – “maybe a national team” – has hung over every discussion of his future since. It still does.

International football offers a compromise for someone who lives the game but craves space. Fewer training sessions. Fewer games. Intense bursts of work around qualifiers and tournaments, then time back with family. For a self-confessed football obsessive, it looks like the perfect halfway house: enough to satisfy the itch, not enough to consume his life.

Sky Sports’ Callum Bishop summed it up bluntly: Guardiola remains the biggest commodity in football management. He was that after Barcelona, before Bayern Munich. He is that again now, older, more reflective, but still the reference point.

The question is when he decides that balance between rest and reinvention finally tilts back towards the dugout.

Italy left searching, Guardiola still waiting

For Italy, the search goes on. Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo are understood to be among the alternative candidates as the FIGC scramble to reset after another brutal qualification failure. They brought in Maldini and Leonardo to drive change; now that change will have to happen without the man they wanted to build it around.

For Guardiola, the path is clearer, if not yet active. He has stepped away from the daily grind he dominated for so long. He has turned down England once and now Italy, even with the promise of control, prestige and a nation at his feet.

He insists he needs time. History suggests he will not stay away forever.
