Oxford United Secures First League One Victory Under Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey walked away from Stevenage with more than just his first win as Oxford United head coach. He left with proof that his new side can scrap, suffer and still find a way to play.

In a tight, bruising contest, Oxford had to wait until the second half to make the breakthrough. The game had been exactly what Ramsey expected: hostile, physical, and demanding without the ball. His players embraced it.

They defended. Then they struck.

Gatlin O'Donkor delivered the key moment, finishing clinically after a clever move that began with a player whose future already lies elsewhere. Stan Mills, making his first appearance since Ramsey confirmed he has agreed to join Preston North End in January, came off the bench and immediately changed the tempo. His assist for O'Donkor’s opener underlined why Oxford will miss him when he goes.

The goal settled Oxford. The nerves that had hung over their search for a first League One win of the season began to lift. Ramsey’s side started to dictate, pressing higher, passing with more conviction, and pushing Stevenage back.

The pressure told again.

Cameron Brannagan stepped up from the penalty spot to add a second, a typically composed finish that gave Oxford breathing space and turned a hard-fought away performance into a commanding scoreline.

Stevenage refused to fold and forced a tense finish with a late strike deep into added time, but Oxford held on, showing the resilience their manager had demanded.

"It was a really tough place to go to but [it was] a test that we stood up to," Ramsey told BBC Radio Oxford, clearly satisfied with the way his players handled the grind of the first half. He highlighted the defensive work that laid the foundations for the win, praising how his side "defended the box superbly" when they were under pressure.

That resistance gave Oxford something they have been searching for in the early weeks of the campaign: a platform. Once they had weathered the storm, they grew into the game and, as Ramsey put it, "really had control of the game" after the break.

Mills’ cameo added a different kind of emotion to the afternoon. The 22-year-old was warmly received by the travelling Oxford support despite his impending move, a reaction that clearly struck a chord with his manager.

"The reception that he got [from the Oxford fans] was really pleasing and Stan deserves that," Ramsey said. "He's been a player of high quality over the last few years and he deserves that moment with the fans today."

For Ramsey, this was more than a tick in the win column. It was a statement that his Oxford side can go to difficult grounds, absorb pressure, and still impose themselves when the chance comes.

Next up is another test of that growing belief: a trip to Huddersfield on Tuesday, 1 September.
