Olwethu Makhanya Joins Rangers: South African Defender's European Dream

Olwethu Makhanya’s European dream has landed in Glasgow – and Rangers have their eighth signing of a relentless summer rebuild.

The South Africa defender arrives from Philadelphia Union for an undisclosed fee, signing a four-year deal with an option of a further year, as Derek McInnes continues to reshape his squad with youth, energy and resale value in mind.

From Stellenbosch to Ibrox

Makhanya is only 22, but his route to Ibrox has already covered a lot of ground.

He first emerged at Stellenbosch in South Africa, where his performances quickly pushed him towards the national set-up. That rise earned him a move to Major League Soccer, and he forced his way into the Philadelphia Union first team last year.

He did not look back. Fifty-three appearances later, he leaves MLS with a reputation as one of the league’s more intriguing young centre-backs.

The move to Scotland ticks off a childhood ambition. "For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true," he said, struggling to put the moment into words. "I can't even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to join such a big club with so much history. I can't wait to get started."

For a player who has climbed quickly through each level, this is the biggest step yet.

World Cup recognition, Ibrox expectation

Makhanya’s progress at club level has already been recognised back home. His form earned him a place in South Africa’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, a significant marker for a defender still learning his craft.

He did not feature at this summer’s finals, but simply being part of that environment underlines how he is viewed within the national team set-up: one for the future, and possibly the near future.

Rangers are betting on that same trajectory. A four-year contract, with the option of a fifth, signals a long-term investment rather than a short-term patch.

McInnes’ kind of defender

McInnes has been clear about what he wants his new signing to bring.

"He's got a lot of athleticism and good potential," the Rangers manager said ahead of Friday’s Scottish Premiership opener at Dundee United. The challenge now is translating those qualities from MLS to the rougher edges of Scottish football.

"And while he's coming from the MLS, to a different country and a different type of football, we feel he's got the attributes that can cope with that."

That line matters. Scottish football will test his timing, his physicality, his decision-making under pressure in tight, hostile grounds as much as in the grandeur of Ibrox. Rangers believe his pace, recovery speed and mobility across the back line will stand up to it.

If they are right, Makhanya will not just be another summer name on a list of eight. He will be a central piece in how this new-look Rangers side defends, presses and dares to play higher up the pitch as a new season – and a new chapter in his career – begins.
