Martin Ødegaard Returns to Arsenal Training
Martin Ødegaard is back in an Arsenal tracksuit, but not yet back under the floodlights.
The club captain reported for pre-season work at London Colney after his post-World Cup break, with Arsenal confirming his return via their official channels on Tuesday. The images were familiar: Ødegaard in boots, on the grass, ball at his feet. The timing, though, is carefully calibrated rather than rushed.
Ødegaard back – but not in Dublin
While Ødegaard eased himself into drills at the training centre, the rest of Mikel Arteta’s senior squad were in Dublin preparing for Wednesday night’s friendly against Real Betis. He will not feature in that game, and that decision is deliberate rather than cautious.
Arsenal’s staff have set a clear pattern this summer. Gabriel Magalhães and Gabriel Martinelli both rejoined the group late last week after their own World Cup exertions, then watched from the sidelines as the team faced Girona. No short cuts, no sentiment. Fitness first.
The same principle now applies to the captain.
A return mapped out by the calendar
The schedule tells the story. Brazil’s World Cup exit came on July 5, Norway’s on July 11. The two Gabriels were always going to be back before Ødegaard, and the Norwegian’s return this week falls neatly into that sequence.
By that logic, the rest of Arsenal’s World Cup contingent – those who went deeper into the tournament – are expected to filter back in by Thursday of next week, seven or eight days after Norway’s exit. They will walk straight into a sprint finish of a pre-season.
The clock is already ticking towards the Community Shield on Sunday, August 16. With such a narrow window between their return and that Wembley date, expectations inside the club are realistic: minutes for those late arrivals in that fixture would be a bonus, not a plan.
Eyes on the Emirates Cup
For Ødegaard, the more natural target is closer to home. Arsenal face Borussia Dortmund in the Emirates Cup this weekend, and that is when the captain is likely to feel the ball at his feet in a match again.
Arteta’s staff offered a clear template in the Girona friendly. Piero Hincapié, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres were each handed roughly half an hour as they stepped back into action. The same staged reintroduction is on the cards now.
The expectation is simple: the Gabriels should see similar cameos against Betis, Ødegaard should follow suit against Dortmund. Not a full return, but a first taste. Enough to sharpen the touch, not enough to drain the legs.
Arsenal know exactly what they are doing with their captain. The temptation to throw him straight in is obvious. The plan to resist it might define how sharp he looks when the real season finally starts.
