Steven Nzonzi Returns to French Football with USL Dunkerque

Steven Nzonzi is back in France, and back where it all quietly began.

USL Dunkerque have confirmed the signing of the 37-year-old midfielder, a World Cup winner in 2018 and a veteran of 11 professional clubs, handing their young squad a heavyweight in the middle of the pitch.

Nzonzi arrives as a free agent after leaving Stoke City in early July, fresh from a 2025-26 season in which he featured 31 times for the Potters. He started 17 of those matches and chipped in with a goal, a reminder that even in the twilight of his career he remained trusted in the Championship’s grind.

Now he returns to Ligue 2, a division he last graced in 2008-09 with Amiens SC, when he was a tall, rangy prospect rather than a decorated leader. Back then, he was the one learning. This time, he walks into a dressing room with an average age of 24 as the reference point.

For Dunkerque, that is the attraction. A young side with ambition, but in need of someone who has seen every side of the game. Nzonzi has lifted the World Cup with France, navigated title races and relegation scraps, and adapted to different leagues and styles. That catalogue of experience now belongs to USLD.

There is also a sense of homecoming. Born in Colombes, in the Paris region, Nzonzi steps back into French football after his spell with Stade Rennais FC between 2020 and 2021. The move to Dunkerque reconnects him with his roots and with a domestic scene that watched him leave as a promising midfielder and now welcomes him back as a 20-cap international.

Dunkerque’s ambitions are clear. They have flirted with promotion before, finishing fourth two years ago, close enough to feel the pull of Ligue 1 without quite breaking through. By adding a player of Nzonzi’s stature, they are signaling that those aspirations have not dimmed.

The question now is simple: how far can a young, hungry squad go with a World Cup winner anchoring their midfield?
