Notts County Sign Ishe Samuels-Smith on Loan from Chelsea

Notts County have turned to Chelsea’s talent pool to strengthen their left flank, bringing in Ishe Samuels-Smith on a season-long loan as they prepare for life back in League One.

The 20-year-old, comfortable in multiple roles down the left side of defence, arrives at Meadow Lane with a clear brief: add energy, balance and flexibility to a squad stepping up a level for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign.

Samuels-Smith spent last season at Swansea City, where he gained Championship experience with six appearances after re-signing for Chelsea on a permanent deal from Strasbourg. Those minutes in a demanding division, even in a supporting role, will appeal to a Notts side that needs players who already understand the tempo and physical edge of senior football.

His pedigree runs deeper than club football. Samuels-Smith has represented England at Under-20 level, a marker of his standing within his age group and a hint at the technical quality Chelsea saw when they brought him back from France.

“Ishe is a talented young player who is capable of contributing in both attacking and defensive phases,” County director of football Richard Montague told the club website, underlining why the Magpies moved for him now.

For Notts County, back in League One and keen to stay there, this is the kind of loan that has to land. For Samuels-Smith, it’s the chance to turn promise and potential into a full, unforgiving season of men’s football.
