Nottingham Forest Signs Ousmane Diomande for £34.3m

Nottingham Forest have landed one of Europe’s most coveted young defenders, completing a £34.3m deal for Ivory Coast centre-back Ousmane Diomande from Sporting on a four-year contract.

This is not a speculative punt. It’s a statement.

Glasner gets his man

Oliver Glasner pushed hard for Diomande. The Forest head coach had tried to take him to Crystal Palace and, this time, the pursuit did not slip away. Weeks of negotiations with Sporting ended with Forest agreeing a fixed fee of around €40m for the 22-year-old, underlining just how central he is to Glasner’s rebuild.

Forest have not simply bought potential. They have bought a defender already hardened by pressure at the sharp end of European football.

Diomande arrives after four seasons at Sporting, where he made 132 appearances, scored seven goals and helped the Lisbon club win the Primeira Liga twice. He was a key part of the side that reached the Champions League knockout stages and completed a domestic double in the 2024/25 campaign.

That kind of résumé at 22 is rare. Forest have paid for that rarity.

A winner before his peak

Diomande’s rise has not been confined to club football. He was part of the Ivory Coast squad that lifted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, ending an eight-year wait for his country. He already has 15 caps and featured once at this summer’s World Cup, adding another layer of big-stage experience to his profile.

The defender spoke with the conviction of someone who knows why he has been brought in and what is expected of him.

“I am very happy to be here. It is a historic club, and it motivates me to join such a club,” he said after signing. “I believe we can achieve very good things this season and I am looking forward to meeting the players and head coach.

“I will give my best and all I can to help the team. I cannot wait to meet the supporters at the City Ground and together we can have a good season.”

The message is clear: he is not in Nottingham to ease his way in. He is here to drive standards.

Forest’s new defensive pillar

Inside the club, there is no attempt to play down the significance of the deal. Chief football officer George Syrianos underlined how closely Diomande fits the profile Forest have been chasing.

“We have been very clear on the profile of player we want to add to the squad, so we are excited to welcome Ousmane to the club,” Syrianos said.

“He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title-winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest.

Powerful. Commanding. Winning mentality. Those are not throwaway compliments; they are a job description for a side that has often lived too close to the bottom of the Premier League table.

With Willy Boly released and defensive reshaping underway, Diomande is being brought in to anchor a new-look back line, not to hide within it.

A summer of sharp edges at the City Ground

Forest’s business this window has been anything but quiet. Diomande is the headline arrival, but he joins a cluster of new faces as the club reshapes both ends of the pitch and its wage structure.

In come Boyd Fraser from Hearts, Mason Ayre from Glentoran and Blaine McClure from Rangers, all for undisclosed fees, as Forest continue to scour the British market for emerging talent. Xaver Schlager arrives on a free from RB Leipzig, bringing proven European midfield quality, while Grady McDonnell (Club Brugge) and Kasen Brown (Manchester City) also join on free transfers.

The outgoings tell an even starker story of transition.

Elliot Anderson has departed for Manchester City in a blockbuster £116m deal, a sale that dramatically alters Forest’s financial landscape and gives context to the Diomande fee. David Carmo has moved to Olympiacos, with Joe Gardner heading to Falkirk and Cormac Daly to Hearts, all for undisclosed sums.

There has also been a significant clearing of the decks. Angus Gunn has joined San Jose Earthquakes on a free, with Ben Hammong (Boston United), Justin Hanks (Solihull Moors), Danny Anisjko (Chesterfield) and Cormac Daly all leaving without fees. Jota Silva has gone to Olympiacos on loan, while senior figures such as Willy Boly, Stefan Ortega, Shae Cahill and Esapa Osong have been released.

This is not tinkering around the edges. It is a squad being retooled with a clear idea of age profile, athleticism and mentality.

At the centre of that shift stands Ousmane Diomande, a 22-year-old with titles, Champions League knockout nights and a continental trophy already behind him. The City Ground will soon get its first look at him in red.
