Rio Ngumoha’s proposed switch from Liverpool to Bayern Munich has dramatically fallen apart – just days after a “full verbal agreement” was reportedly in place.

The 17-year-old winger, one of the few bright sparks in Liverpool’s bleak 2025/26 campaign, had emerged as a surprise priority target for Vincent Kompany as Bayern scoured the market for competition on the left flank. Having missed out on Anthony Gordon, the German champions turned to Ngumoha, who only joined Liverpool from Chelsea and is viewed inside Anfield as a potential cornerstone of the club’s future.

Those hopes looked under serious threat this week.

From secret target to collapsed deal

The first hint of Bayern’s move came when David Ornstein reported that the Bundesliga giants were exploring a deal for Ngumoha, describing him as Bayern’s primary target for the left side. Liverpool, Ornstein stressed, insisted the teenager was not for sale and intended to strengthen their attack, not strip it back.

Behind the scenes, the story was moving quickly.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg later revealed that Bayern had been negotiating with Ngumoha and his representatives for weeks, keeping him as a “secret candidate” while they chased other attacking options. According to Plettenberg, the talks culminated on Tuesday, 26 May, when Bayern and Ngumoha’s camp reached a full verbal agreement.

Kompany had personally spoken to the youngster and given the green light. Ngumoha was lined up as an “absolute priority” backup to Luis Díaz, part of a reshaped Bayern front line that was also supposed to feature Gordon. For a 17-year-old who had only just broken through at Liverpool, it was a huge show of faith.

Then the move hit the wall.

Plettenberg reported on Thursday that the proposed transfer had “collapsed for the time being”, bringing an abrupt halt to what had looked like a rapidly advancing deal. No club-to-club agreement had been struck, and Liverpool’s hardline stance remained unchanged.

Liverpool’s gem back in the spotlight

Inside Anfield, the sense has long been that Ngumoha is on the verge of a major leap. Club figures expect him to “explode” next season, potentially saving Liverpool a significant outlay in the transfer market. Talks over a new contract have already been under discussion, with the club eager to lock down one of their most gifted academy products.

Ngumoha’s emergence last season was one of the few positives in a year that drifted badly under former head coach Arne Slot. The teenager’s direct running and fearlessness on the ball offered rare sparks in a side that often looked flat and predictable. Many supporters felt he merited more minutes than he received.

That could now change.

New head coach Andoni Iraola is expected to bring a more aggressive, front-foot style to Anfield, a system that should suit Ngumoha’s pace and willingness to attack defenders. For Bayern, the failure to close the Ngumoha deal leaves Kompany still searching for a left-sided option. Plettenberg indicated that attention may now turn more sharply towards other targets such as Brown and Saibari, as the club tries to add depth and variety around Díaz.

For Liverpool, the situation is more delicate. Interest from a club of Bayern’s stature at such an early stage of Ngumoha’s career underlines just how highly he is rated across Europe. The verbal agreement that was in place shows the player and his camp are not blind to opportunities elsewhere.
