Neymar Explains Unexpected Absence as Santos Fall 3-0 to Palmeiras in Copa do Brasil
Neymar spoke out after missing from the lineup as Santos suffered a 3-0 defeat away at rivals Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil round of 16 first leg. The 34-year-old forward was absent from the matchday squad, sparking questions following Santos' lackluster performance at Nubank Parque.
Flaco Lopez Leads Palmeiras to Victory
Palmeiras took full advantage of Neymar's absence, dismantling Santos with a convincing win. Flaco Lopez opened the scoring with a powerful long-range shot. Just before halftime, Andreas Pereira capitalized on a loose ball to double the lead. Lopez sealed the game with a precise second-half header from an Agustin Giay cross, giving Palmeiras a solid advantage heading into the second leg.
Neymar Clarifies Coaching Choice
The No. 10 had been part of the preliminary traveling group but was left out of the final squad. He quickly denied any injury rumors and attributed his absence to the coaching staff's rotation strategy. In a comment on Instagram, Neymar said, "I was available to play! It was a decision by the coaching staff, due to the sequence of games we have."
Heavy Matchload Prompts Rest
Resting Neymar followed a demanding schedule where he played full matches against Macara, Vasco da Gama, and Mirassol consecutively. With Neymar out and Gabigol only entering in the second half, Santos found it difficult to penetrate Palmeiras' solid defense and failed to create significant chances. Palmeiras missed opportunities too, as Giay and Mauricio each failed clear one-on-one attempts against the Santos goalkeeper.
Santos Faces Tough Road Ahead
Now, Santos must recover swiftly before an intense away derby versus Corinthians in the Campeonato Brasileiro this weekend. Afterwards, they face the challenge of overturning a three-goal deficit at home against Palmeiras in the return leg at Vila Belmiro, followed by a trip to Internacional. Neymar’s return to the starting eleven is seen as key to reigniting Santos’ attack and keeping their cup hopes alive.
Upcoming Matches:
- Corinthians vs Santos FC: 30 Aug 2026, 21:00 (Serie A)
- Santos FC vs Mirassol: 30 Aug 2026, 23:30 (Serie A)
- Palmeiras vs Santos FC: Return leg date TBA
