Newcastle United Eyes Felix Nmecha Amid Premier League Competition

Felix Nmecha’s name has been circling around England for weeks. Now there’s another heavyweight in the mix.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been credited with interest in the Borussia Dortmund midfielder. Sky Sports now add Newcastle United to that growing list, with Eddie Howe described as a long-term admirer of the 25-year-old Germany international.

This is not a new fascination on Tyneside. Howe looked closely at Nmecha in 2023 as Newcastle searched for a dynamic central midfielder, before the club chose to move for Sandro Tonali from AC Milan instead. The Italian arrived, Nmecha stayed in Dortmund, and the story seemed to close.

It hasn’t.

Newcastle’s recruitment team are again tracking the player, and the possibility of Nmecha finally walking out at St James’ Park has been revived. He fits the profile: athletic, technically sharp, comfortable operating in central areas where Howe wants energy and control.

The problem is the price.

Sky Sports report that Nmecha’s contract at Borussia Dortmund contains an €85 million release clause, a figure that would instantly test Newcastle’s spending power and their room for manoeuvre under financial regulations. That sort of number pushes him out of the “opportunistic signing” bracket and into the territory of a marquee commitment.

Complicating matters further, voices in Germany have pushed back on that claim, stating there is no active release clause in the deal until 2027. If that stance holds, any negotiation would be dictated by Dortmund, not by a fixed buy-out figure, and the Bundesliga club would be under no pressure to sell on anyone’s terms but their own.

So the chase is clear, the admiration is obvious, and the Premier League interest is stacking up.

Whether Newcastle are willing – or even able – to pay the kind of fee Dortmund can now demand will decide if this is the start of a serious pursuit or just another name on a very ambitious list.
