Newcastle Targets Spurs' Bergvall Amid Tonali Transfer Delay

Newcastle United are preparing a major move for Tottenham midfielder Bergvall – but the bid will not land on Spurs’ desk until the middle of August.

The Magpies’ interest in the highly rated Sweden international comes at a time when the player is keen to force a way out of north London after slipping down Ange Postecoglou’s pecking order. Recent midfield arrivals at Tottenham have squeezed his route to regular starts, and the club now sit in a position of strength over a player who wants more than a squad role.

Tottenham have already turned down a €50 million (£42m) offer from an unnamed Premier League rival and are said to be holding firm for a premium fee closer to £60m before even considering a sale. For now, Spurs are dictating the terms.

Newcastle, though, are dictating the timing.

Waiting game built around Tonali

The decision to hold fire until 16 August is no accident. It is directly tied to Sandro Tonali’s high-profile move in the opposite direction earlier this summer.

Tonali left St James’ Park for Tottenham on 2 July in a blockbuster transfer that stunned Tyneside and reshaped both clubs’ midfields. That deal now casts a long shadow over Newcastle’s pursuit of Bergvall.

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson has outlined the logic behind the delay, pointing to UEFA’s new 45-day rule on player exchanges and related transactions.

“They may well be waiting just to see what happens with Newcastle because they need to wait for the 45 days to pass so that it's not player exchange from Tonali,” Borson told Football Insider. “Once that passes, and I think it's probably about another 16 days for that, that opens up another possible route.”

In other words, Newcastle are biding their time to ensure any move for Bergvall is treated as a clean, separate deal rather than part of a linked exchange with Tonali. The calendar, not the market, is calling the shots.

Turbulent summer on Tyneside

All of this unfolds against a backdrop of upheaval at Newcastle.

This is not a settled squad quietly adding a final piece. This is a club in transition, with key pillars already out the door and more potentially following.

Anthony Gordon has gone. Tonali has gone. Bruno Guimaraes, the heartbeat of the midfield, is increasingly tipped to join Arsenal, with reports growing louder that his time on Tyneside is nearing an end.

On the touchline, stability looks just as fragile. Widespread reports suggest Eddie Howe is poised to leave, with Al-Hilal head coach Matthias Jaissle lined up as his immediate successor. If that change is confirmed, Newcastle will be asking a new manager to rebuild a dressing room that has lost both talent and leaders in a single window.

In that context, Bergvall is more than a luxury target. He represents a statement that Newcastle still intend to compete at the top end of the Premier League, even as the foundations shift beneath them.
