Newcastle United Set for Unexpected Managerial Change with German Coach Matthias Jaissle Poised to Take Charge
Just weeks before the new Premier League season kicks off, Newcastle United looks ready to make a startling change in their managerial position. Reports from English media reveal that Eddie Howe, the club’s long-standing and successful head coach, has decided to step down immediately, only 22 days before the season begins.
Matthias Jaissle Emerges as Front-runner
The 38-year-old German coach Matthias Jaissle is reportedly set to replace Howe. Jaissle gained recognition during his time at RB Salzburg and moved on to manage Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia in 2023, where he remains contracted until 2027. However, terminating that contract seems feasible since both Newcastle and Al-Ahli share majority ownership by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Eddie Howe’s Tenure and Achievements
Since his appointment in 2021, Howe has steered Newcastle to remarkable success, driven by an aggressive transfer strategy. The club ended a two-decade absence from the Champions League by qualifying twice and secured the League Cup title in 2025, milestones few expected.
Recent Developments and Transfer Market Concerns
Howe had been preparing the squad normally, managing three friendlies in recent weeks, including a 4-1 win over Bristol City just days ago. Yet, reports suggest his decision to quit solidified over the last 48 hours. Sky Sports indicates dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer dealings contributed to his choice. Newcastle is parting ways with key players Sandro Tonali (sold for 108 million euros to Tottenham Hotspur) and Anthony Gordon (transferred to FC Barcelona). Captain Bruno Guimaraes might also leave. Meanwhile, the future of German international Nick Woltemade remains uncertain after a challenging debut season following his 75 million euro move from VfB Stuttgart.
